Analysis & Breakdown

House Money?

The Carolina Panthers are 6-6 on the year and coming off an ugly loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Bryce Young threw for just 169 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. The Panthers scored just 9 total points and really seemed to abandon the run game. Carolina ran just 9 total run plays if you exclude Young’s four scrambles for 15 yards.

The Black Cats have been carried by their run game this year and it was odd to see them stray so far away from it against the Niners. Rico Dowdle’s been the center piece of this offense and despite averaging 6.3 yards per carry last week, he carried the ball just six total times. The Panthers were unable to capitalize on 3 interceptions from Purdy in the first half and went into the break with just 3 points on the board.

The Panthers would score a singular touchdown in the second half and just looked lost on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, they held the Niners to 20 points and managed to force 3 turnovers. Carolina ranks 13th in points allowed this year but have not done a good job of generating pressure on opposing QBs. The Panthers rank 2nd last in sacks per game, QB hits and bottom 10 in pressure generated.

The only question left to ask is: Are the Panthers for real or just playing with house money?

Hollywood Rams

It’s hard to argue with the Rams as the current best team in football. The offense is 6th in points, 6th in redzone efficiency, 3rd in first downs, 5th in passying yards, 7th in yards per play and they don’t give up sacks or turnovers. Matthew Stafford’s having a career year at the age of 37 years old; averaging 257.3 pass yards per game with 30 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions.

It’s only Week 13.

Outside of just Stafford, Davante Adams and Puka Nacua have been the anchors of this offensive attack. The two account for 52.7% of the Rams’ target share and it’s easy to see why. Nacua’s already got 80 receptions for 947 yards, 4 touchdowns and averaging 94.7 yards per game. Opposite of Nacua is Adams. Adam’s has just 48 catches for 631 yards but he leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns.

Adams has 12 touchdowns this year through just 11 games and needs just seven more to eclipse his career high of 18. Most of Adams touchdowns have come from within the 5-yard line and until someone finds a way to stop, you can expect Head Coach Sean McVay to continuously go back.

Davante Adams

Davante Adams looks to get loose this week in London

I don’t usually bet touchdowns at this price, but with Davante Adams I’ll make an exception. Adams is currently seeing a 37.3% redzone target share this year and with both Adams and Stafford encroaching on career high numbers, I’m expecting Head Coach McVay to help his guys reach those milestones.

The Panthers defense has been good this year but the lack of pass rush makes me weary. Stafford is the NFL’s highest graded passer when kept clear, posting a near perfect grade of 97.4. He’s completing 76.0% of his passes when kept clean, avergaing 8.1 yards per attempt and posting a passer rating of 126.7.

If Stafford’s allowed to sit in the pocket, he’s going to pick apart this Panthers defense. I’m predicting at least 3-4 redzone opportunities for this Rams offense and if that’s the case, Adams is going to get in for six. The vet’s just seven touchdowns short of a career high and eight touchdowns short of becoming just the third NFL player of all time to finish with 20 or more receiving touchdowns in a singular season.
