Analysis & Breakdown

First Win

The Saints not only got their first win of the season last week, but Spencer Rattler got his first win as a starting quarterback and Head Coach Kellen Moore got his first win as a head coach. The Saints looked great last week, Rattler completed 67% of his passes for 225 yards, one touchdown and no turnovers. The Saints scored 26 points and more importantly held the Giants to just 14 points. They forced the Giants to commit five turnovers which directly lead to 13 points the other way.

However, this week the Saints will line up against a much more formidable opponent; the New England Patriots. The Saints could also be without their All-Pro RB, Alvin Kamara this week due to an ankle injury suffered at practice. Kamara remains day-to-day but with the team sitting at 1-4 I find it hard to believe the Saints will be pressed to get him out there.

Elsewhere on this Saints team, Chris Olave has looked phenomenal. Olave’s seeing 31.4% of the Saints’ total targets, he’s caught 33 of his 35 ‘catchable’ targets and is tied for 4th most receptions in the NFL. Rattler’s looked a lot better this year and Olave’s been a direct beneficiary of his production.

Drizzy Drake

Drake Maye is that guy. This year Maye’s been one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the league. He’s 2nd in completion percentage, 5th in pass yards, sixth in passer rating and has two touchdowns on the ground. He’s averaging 252.2 yards per game with seven touchdowns through the air and just two interceptions. Maye also leads the league in completion rate on throws of 10+ yards and he’s the only quarterback to record a 78% catchable throw rate in every game this year.

Last week we saw the full power of this aerial attack. Maye and the Patriots went into Highmark Stadium and handed the Bills their first loss of the year. The second year QB finished with 273 pass yards, no turnovers and completed 73% of his passes. Stefon Diggs had his best game as a Patriot, finishing with 10 catches on 12 targets and 146 yards. The Maye/Diggs connection took a little while to get rolling but it’s coming together nicely.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Stefon Diggs

Over the last two weeks, Diggs has been absolutely unstoppable. Diggs has seen 19 targets, catching 16 balls for 247 yards and no touchdowns. He’s seeing a 39.6% target share, averaging 128 yards per game, and 6.33 yards per route run. His connection with Maye took some time to develop but it’s now bearing fruit.

Last week Diggs went back to Buffalo for the first time as an opponent, the Patriots entered the game as an 8-point dog and walked away with the win. The Patriots defense stood tough but offensively it was the Maye/Diggs show. Diggs accounted for over half of Maye’s yards through the air and continued to beat Buffalo’s coverage team down the field.

Over these last two weeks, Diggs ranks 4th in the NFL in separation percentage and 14th in route win rate. The Saints rank 9th in pass yards allowed but a lot of that has to do with their opponents and the fact they’ve been apart of a few ugly losses. New Orleans ranks dead last in pass rush grade and have not done a good job of generating pressure.

When Maye’s kept clean this year, he’s completing 80.5% of his passes, he’s thrown seven touchdowns and has a passer rating of 118.9. If the Saints can’t get home this week, Maye should have an opportunity to pick apart this secondary.
