Packers vs. Steelers | NFL Week 8 Breakdown & Best Bets: Master vs. Apprentice

Jordan Love

The matchup I’m most excited for this week, the Packers take a trip to Pittsburgh to visit their old Quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is now in Steelers Yellow and ready to face the team that drafted him for the first time in his career. Sunday Night Football, I couldn’t be more excited.

Analysis & Breakdown

The Master

Aaron Rodgers is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers and for the first time in his career he’s going head to head with the franchise that drafted him. Rodgers is the Packers’ all-time leader in passing touchdowns, 2nd in passing yards, 2nd in wins, and an all-time TD/INT ratio of 4.35. He’s one of the best passers in NFL History and Packer fans (me) are lucky he spent a majority of his career doing it in the Green and Yellow.

This year Rodgers has the Steelers out to a 4-2 record with the 11th best offense in terms of points per game. He’s averaging 211.0 pass yards per game with 14 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 68.6% completion rate. He’s back to slingin’ touchdowns while preventing turnovers and he’s got a good looking receiving core to help.

The Steelers run 13-personnel at a league high rate and it’s why we saw three of their TEs see snap shares north of 60% last week. All three big boys finished with a touchdown and it’s pretty evident how important these guys are up front.

Defensively the Steelers could be a lot better. They rank 19th in points allowed, 31st in pass yards allowed, 31st in 1st downs allowed and 25th in opponent 3rd down conversion rate. They have a tough time through the air and an even tougher time getting off the field. Last we saw this Steelers secondary get torched for 257 yards and two touchdowns by the tandem in Cincinnati.

The Apprentice

Jordan Love was drafted with the #26 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, a pick then sent a shock through the entire Packers organization and fan base. A Quarterback in the first round, this was a clear message to their superstar under center that the clock just started. The Packers drafted his replacement long before Rodgers was even prepared to think about retirement, but no plans to start him; yet.

Love sat on the bench for three years, learning from the four time MVP and Super Bowl Winner. Rodgers made his exit after the 2022 season, taking his talent to the Jets for two abysmal years. Now Love’s in Year 3 as a starter, he’s made the postseason twice and already a playoff win under his belt.

Through Love’s first 39 starts, he’s thrown for 9,176 yards, 68 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. He’s got a 64.3% completion rate, 2.72 TD/INT ratio and a passer rating of 97.3. That’s better than both Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre through their first 39 starts. Both Favre and Rodgers won 27 games in their first three years as a starter. Love’s won 22 of his 39 starts so far in his career and he’s just seven weeks into Year 3.

The Packers are 1st in the Division, 1st in the NFC and Jordan Love’s been the mastermind behind all of it. The Packers are passing at a bottom three rate but Love’s completing 69.3% of his passes and has 10 touchdowns through the air and three interceptions.

This game’s full of hype and I can’t wait for Sunday Night.

Sunday Night’s Best Bet

Tucker Kraft o51.5 Receiving Yards (-110) | BetOnline

Tucker Kraft

National Tight End Day and it’s Primetime on Sunday. Tucker Kraft has been the Packers most consistent receiver and this week’s matchup with the Steelers is a juicy one. The Steelers rank last in receiving yards allowed and 28th in receiving yards allowed to the TE position.

Kraft’s seeing a 19.8% target share this year and going up against a defense that’s struggled against tight ends that line up in-line. The Steelers rank 27th in yards allowed to TEs in the in-line position and Kraft ranks 2nd in receiving yards from the position.

Pittsburgh just gave up 44 yards to Fant, gave up 81 to Fannin Jr. earlier this year and let Hunter Henry go for a season high 90 yards. This week I’m expecting Kraft to act as an outlet for Love as he faces this tough Steelers pass rush.

Yes, of course I bet the touchdown.

Tucker Kraft Anytime Touchdown (+160)

Darnell Washington Anytime Touchdown (+350) | BetOnline

Darnell Washington

Going back to the big man on Sunday Night Football. It’s National Tight Ends Day and Washington leads the Steelers in redzone targets. The Packers rank 30th in touchdowns allowed to the TE position and have allowed a touchdown to the position in three straight weeks.

For the value, I’m tapping in once again.
