Cheeseheads in the Desert
The Packers cruised to an easy victory over the Cincinnati Bengals last week and are finally back in the win column. After back to back weeks of miscues and mishaps, the Packers came out of the bye week and handled business. Jordan Love threw for 259 yards one touchdown and one interception. Josh Jacobs finished with his best game of the season, 93 yards on the ground, 57 through the air and two rushing touchdowns.
The defense held up well, pitching a shutout for the first half of this game. Flacco and company scored 18 second half points but this one was never really in doubt. Green Bay ranks 10th in points allowed, 11th in pass yards allowed, 1st in rush yards allowed and 2nd in opponent yards per play.
Green Bay ranks 31st in pass play rate this year and it’s why Jordan Love’s numbers haven’t jumped off the page. Despite that, Love’s averaging 251.8 pass yards per game with nine touchdowns at two interceptions. Love’s completing 70% of his passes and his numbers shoot up when he’s kept clean in the pocket.
When kept clean, Love’s 2nd in completion rate; completing 86% of his passes for nine touchdowns and one interception. The Cardinals rank 27th in pass rush grade this year and 25th in pressure rate. The Packers got some of their big men up front back after the bye week and it showed last week against the Bengals. Love faced pressure on just 27% of his drop backs against the Bengals and the Cardinals pass rush is not any better.
Maybe He Just Ain’t It
In one game with Jacoby Brissett under center, the Cardinals matched their highest offensive output of the year and nearly upset the Indianapolis Colts on the road. Brissett completed 61.4% of his passes for 320 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Marvin Harrison Jr. was out of the lineup due to a concussion he suffered in Week 5 so the team’s leading receivers were Zay Jones and Trey McBride.
McBride finished with eight receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown, while Jones finished the night with five catches for 79 yards. The Cardinals offense looked a lot better with Brissett under center and it really makes you wonder who gives this team the better chance to win games. This is Kyler’s seventh season under center and he’s made it to the postseason just once. He’s got weapon on the offensive side but the problem is he can’t get them the ball.
Last week both Jones and McBride combined for 19 targets and Brissett did a great job of putting his guys in a position to win the ball. He got the ball in the hands of his playmakers and the Cardinals were in that game right until the end. Even if Kyler’s healthy this week, is he the guy you want under center?
Sunday’s Best Bets
Tucker Kraft o46.5 Receiving Yards (-110) | BetOnline
Despite just two receptions last week, we’re going right back to Tucker Kraft. The big man had two catches last week for 43 yards and a touchdown. The Packers were up double digits for majority of last week’s game and it’s why Love only threw the ball 26 total times. The Packers currently sit 31st in pass play rate and this week against the Cardinals I think we see a slight shift.
Last week with Brissett under center, the Cardinals came alive. This week they’ll get Marvin Harrison Jr. back on the field and will look to build on the momentum of last week. Not only will the Cardinals be competing, but their defense ranks 13th in rush yards allowed but 28th in pass yards allowed. The team ranks 30th in both receptions and receiving yards allowed to the TE position and I’m expecting more of the same this week.
Lastly, the Cardinals are running Cover-4 at a league high 28% rate. That’s a defensive scheme we’ve see Kraft excel against. Kraft is seeing a 35% boost in yards per route run against Cover-4 and 17% boost in targets per route run. This means Kraft’s seeing a signficant jump in production against this scheme and it’s why I think Kraft will have a big impact on this week’s matchup.
