Analysis & Breakdown

Jared Goff

Kings of the North

The NFC North currently runs through Detroit. The Lions have now won back to back division titles and were almost a lock to go for their third straight. The Vikings will have a brand new quarterback under center, the Bears are the Bears and the Packers looked the exact same as they did last year. Detroit not only brought all their superstars back, but will get their All-Pro DE, Aidan Hutchinson back on the field.

The Lions defense was formidable last year, taking a significant step back when Hutchinson went down. Nonetheless, the Lions still won 15 games, Jared Goff played at an MVP type level and the Lions’ offense looked unstoppable. This year the team will enter the season with a brand new offensive coordinator and brand new defensive coordinator; not something you want after back to back division titles.

Can the Lions maintain the same level of play without Ben Johnson?

Cheesehead Nation

Last year the Packers went 11-6 on the season, with five of their six losses coming to divisional opponents. They went a combined 0-4 against both the Vikings and Lions and even dropped a game against the Bears. Outside of the NFC North, the Pack went 10-1.

Green Bay had a top-10 defense last year, ranking in the top-7 of pass yards allowed, rush yards allowed and points allowed. They bring almost everyone back this year, in addition to having traded for one of the best defensive players in the game; Micah Parsons. Parsons looks poised for a big year, fresh off signing the biggest non-quarterback deal in NFL history.

Parsons has recorded 12+ sacks in four straight seasons, he’s only 26 years old and adds something to this Packers defense they’ve sorely missed; a consistent pass rush.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Jahmyr Gibbs o22.5 Receiving Yards (-110)

Jahmyr Gibbs

With all the hype surrounding Jahmyr Gibbs entering this season, we’ve got to take a look at his receiving props today. His receptions line is sitting at 2.5 with juice on the over at (-160). Last year Gibbs averaged 3.1 receptions per game, 30.4 receiving yards per game and four receiving touchdowns. All of this in addition to his 83.1 rush yards per game and 16 touchdowns on the ground. It’s easy to see why Gibbs is so important to this Detroit offense.

Gibbs’ has cleared this line 13 of his 18 games last year, even recording 70 yards through the air in their playoff game against the Commanders. Green Bay ranked 27th last year in receiving yards allowed to opposing running backs, 29th in receptions and has allowed Gibbs to clear this line in three of his last four against them.

Romeo Doubs o37.5 Receiving Yards (+100)

Romeo Doubs

Last year we saw a Packers team decimated by injuries. Jordan Love sprained his MCL on the last drive of their Week 1 matchup with the Eagles. He made a speedy recovery to make it back Week 4, threw for 389 yards and four touchdowns against the Vikings, despite losing the game. Proceeded to win four straight games and sustain a groin injury in the first half of their matchup with the Jaguars.

Love didn’t miss any games this time but his mobility in the pocket was basically eliminated. For Romeo Doubs not only was he missing his QB1 for chunk of the year, but he suffered a concussion in their Week 12 win over the 49ers. Despite the setbacks, he lead the team in targets per game, and finished third in receptions; despite playing just 13 games.

In Love’s first season under center, Doubs lead the team in targets (96), receiving touchdowns (8) and finished second in receiving yards. With Jayden Reed’s status up in the air and another missed practice on Thursday, I wouldn’t be surprised if he missed the opener all together. Look for Doubs to fill in the gaps if Reed does end up on the sidelines.
