Analysis & Breakdown

Jungle Cats

The Detroit Lions are 6-3, sit atop the NFC North and have the 2nd highest scoring offense in football. Detroit’s averaging 31.4 points per game, they’re converting 68.4% of their redzone trips into touchdowns (4th), 9th in passing yards, 7th in rushing yards and 4th in yards per play. Jared Goff’s completing 74% of his passes this year, averaging 248.3 pass yards per game with 20 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

In the backfield, the tandem of Sonic and Knuckles is averaging a combined 128.8 rush yards per game and have scored a combined 15 touchdowns. Jahmyr Gibbs is averaging 5.4 yards per carry this year and already has 32 receptions on the year. David Montgomery’s averaging 4.5 yards per carry and has been doing more through the air this year.

Lastly, we can’t forget about their superstar wideout; Amon-Ra St. Brown. St. Brown’s caught 64 balls this year, averaging 77.0 yards per game and he’s scored 8 touchdowns. He’s seeing a 31.2% target share this year and has been the center piece of this Lions’ air attack.

Defensively, the Lions rank 11th in points allowed, 7th in opponent rush yards, 12th in opponent pass yards, but have struggled in the redzone. Detroit ranks 28th in opponent redzone efficiency, allowing their opponents to convert 66.7% of their redzone trips into touchdowns.

Bird Gang

The Eagles have won seven of their first nine games, now winners of three in a row. Jalen Hurts is averaging just 206.7 pass yards per game but he’s manage to throw 16 touchdowns to just 1 interception. Hurts is completing 69% of his passes but the Eagles offense has looked out sorts at times.

Philly ranks 13th in points scored this year, despite having the #1 redzone offense. The Eagles are converting 81% of their redzone trips into touchdowns and that’s something the Lions have really struggled with. Philly’s also struggled to move the ball on the ground this year, ranking 22nd in rush yards per game and just 16th in yards per play.

The defense has been good this year, but they’ve struggled to stop teams on the ground. They rank 19th in rush yards allowed this year and 19th in receiving yards allowed to opposing wideouts.

This week’s game will be just the 2nd home game for Philly in the last month, so you know the fans will be ready and going crazy early. Two big time teams on Primetime, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Sunday’s Best Bets

A.J. Brown o64.5 Receiving Yards (-110) | BetOnline

AJ Brown

This one’s pretty simple, the Eagles star wide receiver has once again complained to the media about his usage in this offense and I am once again going to bet him to have a big game tonight. Brown’s had a down year by most metrics, averaging just 51.0 yards per game with just 3 touchdowns. He’s caught 31 of his 54 targets but him and Jalen Hurts just haven’t been on the same page this year.

This is a line Brown’s cleared just three times this year and now he faces a Lions’ defense that ranks 17th in receiving yards allowed to opposing wideouts. The Lions also run the 4th highest rate of man coverage this year and that’s exactly the type of coverage we’ve seen Brown thrive against.

This year Brown’s target rate jumps to 36.1% against man coverage, compare that to the 16.5% target rate he sees against zone. Hurts also ranks 3rd in EPA against man coverage this year and has looked great off play action. Look for the Eagles to feed the top wideout tonight and make statement against the Lions.
