Analysis & Breakdown

Mariota Magic
The Commanders have not had a good time this year. They’ve lost six of their first nine games, Jayden Daniels is in and out of the lineup with injuries and their defense just does not look good. Daniels has played in six of the Commanders’ nine games and he’s been great when he’s healthy. The problem is he hasn’t been healthy.
Marcus Mariota’s the next guy up and despite giving the Commanders some good games last year, hasn’t looked the same. He’s averaging just 192.0 pass yards per game with four touchdowns and four interceptions across three starts. He’s completing 66.7% of his passes but he’s just not able to make the big plays.
On the defensive side it gets a lot worse. The Commanders’ secondary has been BAD this year, ranked 31st in coverage grade; behind only the Dallas Cowboys. They rank 29th in pass yards allowed and 31st in receiving yards allowed to opposing wideouts.
Washington’s 22nd in points allowed this year and it’s because of their poor redzone defense. The Commanders are allowing opponents to convert 67% of redzone drives into touchdowns and the lack of a pass rush doesn’t help.
Kitten Under Pressure
Jared Goff and the Lions are coming off an ugly loss to the Minnesota Vikings and fall to 1-2 in divisional play this year. Goff’s looking good this year, averaging 239.4 pass yards per game with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s got a passer rating of 115.2 and is completing 73.8% of his passes this year.
The problem is when Goff faces pressure he’s been a completely different QB. When kept clean, Goff ranks 11th in passing grade; completing 83.3% of his passes for 17 touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 133.7. When facing pressure Goff ranks dead last among all QBs (min. 200 attempts) in passing grade. He’s completing just 51.4% of his passes, no touchdowns, two interceptions and passer rating of 60.6.
Washington just lost their best pass rusher for the year in Dorance Armstrong and have generated just four sacks over their last three games.
The Lions have now lost three games this year and after every single one they’ve responded in a huge way. After their Week 1 loss to the Packers they went home to Ford Field and beat the Bears by 31. The loss to Kansas City was ugly but they responded with a big 24-9 win over the Buccaneers on Primetime.
This week it’s the Commanders that could be on the receiving end of a similar type beatdown.

Sunday’s Best Bets
Amon-Ra St. Brown o79.5 Receiving Yards (-105) | BetOnline

Amon-Ra St. Brown is one the best wide receivers in the NFL and this week he gets one of the best matchups in the NFL. Washington is running man coverage at the 8th highest rate of all teams this year and they’ve been doing it terribly. The Commanders rank in the bottom five in yards allowed per snap in man coverage (7.08) and first-down-plus-touchdown rate allowed (52.9%).
Amon-Ra is seeing a 35.4% target rate against man coverage and ranks 5th in receiving grade against man. He’s got an 87% catch rate with six touchdowns and 227 yards; 102 coming after the catch, third most against man. St. Brown’s been elite against all coverage schemes but this is tough to ignore.
St. Brown’s also taking about 51% of his snaps from the slot, a spot the Commanders have struggled against. Washington’s giving up 53% of opponent receiver production to the slot and it’s because of Mike Sainristil. He ranks dead last amongst all corners (min. 130 slot snaps) in yards given up in the slot, 2nd last in yards allowed after the catch and touchdowns allowed.
Since entering the NFL in 2021, Amon-Ra St. Brown leads the NFL in crossing route targets (111), receptions (88), and is the only receiver with over 1,000 receiving yards on crossing routes in that span (1,084).#TBvsDET | #OnePridepic.twitter.com/w1670IynBX
