Analysis & Breakdown

Jared Goff

Trouble at Arrowhead?

It’s Week 6 of the NFL Season and the Chiefs only have two wins. Coming off their third straight trip to the Super Bowl, the Chiefs have lost three of their first five games and do not look like the same old Chiefs we’ve become accustom to.

Patrick Mahomes has been great. He’s averaging 251.4 pass yards per game, he’s thrown eight touchdowns, just two interceptions and is currently the team’s leading rusher. Mahomes is literally doing everything he can to help will his team to a win, but the Chiefs have continued to struggle.

Some of the team’s struggles can be attributed to the fact they still haven’t had the full power of their offense. Rashee Rice will be eligible for return from suspension after this week’s matchup and Xavier Worthy’s only played in two games this year due to injury.

Travis Kelce hasn’t been much help either. The 36-year old TE looks like he’s lost some of that speed and power we’ve begun to expect from him. He’s caught just 22 balls this year and cleared 50 yards through the air just twice. Last week was a little better, Kelce brought in seven of his eight targets for 61 yards and a touchdown.

This week with the Lions in town, the Chiefs will have to find an answer for the league’s top offense.

Kings of the Jungle

Outside of the egg Detroit laid in Week 1 against the Packers, this offense has looked unstoppable. The Lions rank 1st in points, 3rd in redzone efficiency, 12th in pass yards and 7th in rush yards per game. Detroit’s averaging 4.2 touchdowns scored per game this year and have looked to not just win games, but kill their opponents.

Jared Goff’s once again playing out of his mind; averaging 237.4 yards per game with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. Goff’s completing 75% of his passes right now and this week against the Chiefs I don’t see why that changes.

In addition to the aerial attack clicking, the Lions’ two headed monster in the backfield have been doing damage. Both Gibbs and Monty have cleared the 300-yard mark already, combining for 635 yards on the ground and NINE total touchdowns. Gibbs is also the Lions’ 2nd leading receiver, hauling in 22 of his 23 targets for 112 receiving yards.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Tyquan Thornton o17.5 Longest Reception | BetOnline

Tyquan Thornton

We’re still waiting for this line to drop, but I love some Tyquan Thornton props this week. With Xavier Worthy’s status in question, we might need to wait till Sunday for this line, but with Thornton’s big play ability I love it even if Worthy plays.

Last week Worthy played in just his second full game of the year and looked hampered at times during the game. After attending practice in full on Wednesday, Worthy missed Thursday’s practice due to issues with both his shoulder and ankle. Worthy’s a crucial part of this offense and was seeing a 23% target share in his two weeks since coming back.

This week, if the Chiefs are forced to go without him; I’m looking to Thornton to fill the gap. Thornton’s a fourth year wideout out of Baylor. He played his first three years mainly just on the bench for the New England Patriots before being cut during the start of last year. He signed with the Chiefs practice squad in November of 2024 and was elevated to a full time reserve in February of this year.

Now with the Chiefs missing Rashee Rice for the first six weeks in addition to Worthy missing three of their first five games, Thornton was the next man up. Through just five games this year, Thornton’s already surpassed his career high in receiving yards and touchdowns.

The Lions have had trouble with speedy wide receivers this year and have given up a catch of 25+ yards in every game this year. Thornton ran a 4.28s in the 40-yard dash and his speed’s been on full display this year. He’s got catches of 30+ yards in four of the Chiefs’ five games this year, the one miss coming in their blowout win over the Ravens.
