Analysis & Breakdown

Brian Thomas Jr.

Let Brady…Cook?

Nope, not that Brady. Brady Cook, the Jets newest starting QB. Last week we saw Tyrod Taylor get hurt early in their game against the Dolphins and with Justin Fields in street clothes, it was Brady Cook that got the nod.

Cook completed 47% of his passes, threw for 163 yards and 2 interceptions. He was sacked six times, fumbled twice but did luckily recover both. The offense scored just 10 points against a really bad Dolphins defense and this week I don’t see how it gets any better.

Cook will make hist first career start this week and he’s doing it against a Jaguars’ secondary that’s tied for 2nd most interceptions on the year. Outside of the offense, the defense has just been bad. They rank 26th in points allowed, 25th in opponent redzone efficiency and 30th in opponent rush yards.

This year was a wash for the Jets, it’s time to keep losing games and look toward next year.

DUUUUUUVAAAL

The Jaguars are under new leadership and despite all the ‘DUUUUUUUVAAAAL’ jokes from the offseason, Liam Coen has this team atop the AFC South. They’ve won 9 of their 13 games, sit 1-game ahead of the Colts and have won five of their last six games.

After back to back losses to the Rams and Seahawks and a blown 19-point lead to the Texans, it was looking bleak in Duval County. Instead, the Jaguars rattled off four straight wins, including two impressive wins over the Chargers and Colts

The offense ranks 9th in points scored, 13th in redzone efficiency and 10th in first downs. Trevor Lawrence’s play could be better but it’s tough to complain when you’re leading the division. He’s got 18 touchdown passes this year but it’s the 11 interceptions that continue to be an issue.

Speaking of interceptions, this defense does a ton to neutralize those turnovers. He’s got 14 total turnovers this year but this defense has forced 23 of their own. The Jags are tied for 2nd most forced turnovers this year and this week they’ll be up against a rookie QB in his first ever start.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Jakobi Meyers o53.5 Receiving Yards (-107) | Lucky Rebel

I’m going right back to Jakobi Meyers. Since arriving in Jacksonville, Meyers has seen 6+ targets in four of his five starts, the only one he didn’t was his very first game with the team. In their last four games, Meyers leads the team with a 24.5% target share and this week he faces a Jets’ team that is just bad.

Trevor Lawrence has shown a tendency to target receivers in the slot and I think that’s why we’re seeing Meyers thrive in this offense. He’s the prototypical slot wide receiver and that’s exactly what was missing from this offense, an offense run by a pass-first offensive mind in Liam Coen.

Coen is coming off a year in which he coached a receiving core that included Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The Jaguars made this trade with their eyes set on immediate production and Meyers has delivered.

The team’s won 4 of the 5 games he’s played in and all 4 games where Meyers has recorded 6+ targets. This week’s matchup against New York should provide ample opportunity to clear this line.
