Jets vs. Bengals | NFL Week 8 Breakdown & Best Bets: Mighty Joe Young

Joey Flacco

This Sunday we’ve got Joe Flacco and the Bengals hosting the New York Jets with [redacted] under center. Head Coach Aaron Glenn’s stated he doesn’t want to give up any advantages to the Bengals so he won’t be announcing this week’s starter; just yet. Let’s get right into it.

Analysis & Breakdown

Jungle Cats

The Bengals came out last week in front of the home crowd and put on an absolute show. Cincinnati put up 33 points on the Steelers defense, 470 total yards of offense and had their first game with 100+ yards on the ground. Joe Flacco threw for 342 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers. His connection with both Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins has been instant.

Last week the tandem finished with 33 targets between the two of them, 22 receptions for 257 yards and two touchdowns. It was Ja’Marr who once again saw the bulk of targets, reeling in 16 of his 23 targets on the night for 161 yards and one touchdown. On the ground Chase Brown finally had the game Bengals fans were waiting for. He finished with 108 yards on the ground and an efficient 8.8 yards per carry.

Flacco’s helped this Bengals offense come alive and he’s done a great job of taking care of the ball. Flacco’s now thrown five touchdowns in his two games with the Bengals, zero interceptions and is completing 65% of his passes. Flacco’s also thrown 45+ times in back to back games and I don’t expect that to change this week against the Jets.

J-E-T-S

The Jets are bad. There’s really no other way to put it, they’re just terrible. Head Coach Aaron Glenn looks like he’s struggling on the sidelines, Justin Fields does not look like a starting caliber quarterback and the trade rumors have begun to circulate. New York’s now 0-7 on the year and desperate for their first win. If you looked at their schedule three weeks ago, you’d think they could do it here against the Bengals.

Now with Jake Browning back on the bench and Flacco under center, the Jets may not win a game. The team’s offense ranks 27th in points, 29th in third down conversion rate, 26th in first downs and dead last in pass yards per game. The only thing was their run game but over the last two weeks even that’s been flat. In fact, in their last game it got so bad we saw Fields get benched.

Now as we enter Week 8, reports surfaced it would be Tyrod Taylor getting the nod this week. After those initial reports, it came out that Taylor was dealing with a knee issue and the starter was still up in the air. Finally Coach Glenn spoke to the media and made it clear, he doesn’t want to give the Bengals a ‘strategic advantage’ by naming a starter.

Yeah, the Jets are cooked.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Tee Higgins o53.5 Receiving Yards (-110) | BetOnline

Tee Higgins

Flacco’s been a huge upgrade and it’s not up for debate. Now let’s kick it off with a little narrative; Flacco was traded to Cincinnati just over two weeks ago. This year Flacco and his family made the decision for his family to stay out in New Jersey and not move with the veteran QB, just in case something like this happened. However, this week Flacco’s two sons will be in attendance for their dad’s big game.

Add to that the fact Flacco spent three years within the Jets organization, starting nine games for the franchise, throwing 13 touchdowns, six interceptions and winning just one game. This week isn’t a revenge game, but it’s definitely one you’d like to win.

Last week we took the receptions, this week we’re going to the yards. Over the last two weeks, Higgins has 18 targets, 11 of which have been catchable balls; he’s caught all 11 for 158 yards and one touchdown. In the three weeks prior, with Browning under center; Higgins recorded just 15 targets, seven receptions, 69 yards and one touchdown.

Flacco’s been exactly what these two young receivers need and he’s made it abundantly clear how easy his job is with guys like Chase and Higgins on the field. The Jets defense ranks 27th in pass rush grade, 29th in sacks and 30th in quarterback hits. They’ve done a terrible job of generating pressure and even against a bad Bengals offensive line, I see them struggling.

Flacco’s done a great job avoiding pressure since getting to Cincinnati, mainly by getting the ball out quickly and feeding his top two guys. This week not only will Flacco continue to sling the ball 40+ times, but if he gets just a little bit of extra time, he’ll find Tee out there for a big gain.
