Tough Truth(s)
It might be time to start having some tough conversations in the desert. Kyler Murray remains on the IR but this Cardinals team has just looked so much better with Jacoby Brissett under center. The team’s just 1-4 in the five games Brissett’s started, but the offense is averaging 24.2 points per game and has scored 3+ touchdowns in 4 of the 5 games.
Both Trey McBride and Marvin Harrison Jr. have seen a huge uptick in usage and you gotta think they’re happy. McBride’s caught 42 of his 57 targets over the last five games, recording 443 and six touchdowns in the process. Now let’s that to his first five games, all with Kyler under center: 29 catches on 42 targets, 275 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.
Lastly let’s just look at the two QBs head to head numbers. Kyler’s starter five games this year, averaging 192.4 pass yards per game with 6 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and a passer rating of 88.6. Across five starts, Brissett’s averaging 314.0 yards per game, completing 67% of his passes and he’s got 10 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions. Brissett’s been great and it just highlights how this system does work, they just don’t have the QB to get it done.
Tough Time
The Jaguars responded in a big way last week. After losing three of their last four games, the Jaguars were back home, hosting Justin Herbert and the Chargers. Jacksonville held the Chargers to just six points, no touchdowns and just 135 total yards of offense. The Chargers looked lost and Justin Herbert managed just 81 yards through the air.
On the offensive side of the ball, we saw this Jaguars run game come alive. The tandem of Bhayshul Tuten and Travis Etienne combined for 147 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. The offense ranks 13th in points, 7th in first downs, 8th in rushing yards and 25th in yards per play; big reason is an inability to move the ball through the air.
The Jags rank 21st in pass yards per game and Trevor Lawrence has done a terrible job of taking care of the ball. He’s averaging 215.1 pass yards per game with 11 touchdowns but 8 interceptions. He’s got a passer rating of 79.4 and at times has seemed like the true weak point of this Jaguars team.
The defense ranks 12th in points allowed, 2nd in rush yards allowed but 26th in pass yards allowed. The Jags have also struggled to stop opponents once they’ve gotten into the redzone, allowing opponents to convert 64.5% of their redzone trips into touchdowns.

The Cardinals offense just looks better with Jacoby Brissett and with him under center the offense runs through Trey McBride. In five weeks with Brissett, McBride’s seeing a 25.8% target share, 35.0% first read target share. He’s consistently open and his ability after the catch has really opened up this Cardinals offense.
McBride’s seen 57 targets over the last five games, catching 42 of them for 443 yards and 5 touchdowns. Over the las two games, it’s ballooned to 24 targets, 19 catches for 242 yards and 2 touchdowns. McBride’s scored in every single game that Brissett’s started and their connection is a big reason their offense is converting 60% of their redzone drives into touchdowns over the last three weeks.
The Jaguars rank 30th in yards allowed to the TE position and this week might be their toughest test yet. The Jaguars are also playing zone coverage at a top 10 rate this year and we’ve seen McBride really thrive against zone schemes. He’s seeing a 26.2% target rate against zone defense over the last five games and has an 81.6% catch rate. He’s nearly unstoppable and with Brissett under center the volume has been too good to ignore.
