Analysis & Breakdown

Russell Wilson

Beginners Luck or Here to Stay

Last year we witnessed one of the best rookie campaigns by any Quarterback, ever. Jayden Daniels won 12 of the Commanders 17 games, threw for 3500 yards, 25 touchdowns and even ran in six touchdowns of his own. His nine interceptions left some room for improvement, but seven of those interceptions came over the last seven weeks of the season.

This season will be the real test for Daniels; teams will now have a full season of tape, time to prepare and their focus solely on the young quarterback. Thankfully, the Commanders’ retained Terry McLaurin, traded for Deebo Samuel and added some valuable young pieces through the draft. The Commanders will look to build on last year’s season, recording 11 wins and a trip to the NFC Championship game. They’ve retained most of their roster, added more pieces and look well equipped to do just that.

The New York Football Giants

Another season for the Giants and another starting quarterback under center. Russell Wilson signed with the Giants this off-season, citing Malik Nabers as huge contributing factor towards his decision. Russ had a down year last year, missed some time due to injury and just never really figured it out in Pittsburgh. Now he’s in New York, a city that’s been starved for quarterback that can air out the ball.

Let’s talk about Malik Nabers and the rookie season he had. The former LSU Tiger and teammate of Jayden Daniels, recorded 1200 yards, 7 touchdowns and averaged 11 YPC. He did this all in his rookie year, all while playing with three different starting quarterbacks. Russell Wilson definitely isn’t in his prime, but he’s still better than Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy Devito.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Austin Ekeler o49.5 Rushing + Receiving Yards (-110)

Austin Ekeler

Last year was Austin Ekeler’s first year outside San Diego. He played in just 12 games, averaged 30.6 rush yards per game, 30.5 receiving yards per game and scored just four touchdowns. This year, the Commanders traded away Brian Robinson Jr. and drafted Jacory Croskey-Merritt. Ekeler is listed as the team’s RB1 but the feeling around the league is Croskey-Merritt will takeover before the season’s done.

This is Week 1, you have a bonafide RB1 in you’re backfield and you’re playing against a divisional opponent. This is not the game you hand the reigns over to the young rookie, whom you drafted in the seventh round. Ekeler cleared this line in 11 of the team’s 15 games last year, including two of their three playoff games. Ekeler averaged 60.4 yards from scrimmage last year and 4.8 YPC. He averaged 3.7 targets per game last year and saw 4+ targets in each of the team’s playoff games.

Ekeler is a vital part of this Commanders offense and despite the team adding depth through the draft, I wouldn’t be so quick to count him out.

Malik Nabers o69.5 Receiving Yards (-110)

Malik Nabers

In a game where we probably see the Giants playing from behind, we’ve got to take a gander at their top wide out; Malik Nabers. Like I said above, Nabers was elite in his rookie year, despite not playing with a real QB1 all year. Last year, the Giants had the 5th worst passing offense, averaging just 189.9 pass yards per game and just 0.9 passing touchdowns per game (32nd).

Nabers still managed a 1200 yard season, 109 receptions and 7 touchdowns. In two games against the Commanders last year, Nabers recorded 29 targets, 19 catches, 186 total receiving yards and one touchdown. Could it possibly be because of Nabers history of playing alongside Jayden Daniels at LSU? Maybe.

After going 0-2 against his former QB last year, I’m sure Nabers plans to do everything he can to help the Giants secure a win this Sunday.
