Analysis & Breakdown

Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans

Bare Bone Buccaneers

Tampa Bay’s out to a perfect start this year, one of just six teams yet to take a loss. Outside of their Week 3 game with the Jets, their schedule hasn’t made it easy. The Buccaneers opened the season on the road in Atlanta, a division rival. Tampa won the game after a game winning drive was orchestrated by the one and only, Baker Mayfield. It took Tampa five plays to score the game winning touchdown, rookie Emeka Egbuka securing the game winning touchdown.

More of the same in Week 2 against Houston. The Texans toook a late 19-14 lead on a 25-yard Nick Chubb house call. With just two minutes left in the game, the Buccaneers get the ball back and Baker leads an 80-yard game winning touchdown drive; leaving just six seconds left on the clock. Vintage Baker.

Now let’s talk about the bad. Mike Evans left last week’s game against the Jets with a hamstring injury and reports are that he could miss multiple weeks. Chris Godwin remains questionable for this week’s matchup but even if he is back, it’s been a while since he’s been on the field. The offensive line in Tampa has been decimated. Both the starting right tackle and right guard will be out of this week’s matchup against Philly. The good news is it looks like All-Pro left tackle, Tristan Wirfs will return to action after offseason knee surgery.

Wins Might be a Quarterback Stat

Last week I was forced to eat my words, Jalen Hurts was amazing. After scoring the game’s first touchdown, Hurts’ fumbled the ball on the opening drive of the second half and watched Rams turn it into seven the other way. The Eagles were down 26-7 less than a minute into the second half and it looked all but finished in Philly.

Hurts responded with a 5-play, 89-yard drive; capped off by a 33-yard bomb to Dallas Goedert for the touchdown. After the Eagles defense forced a punt on the next possession, Hurts went 72 yards in 13 plays; finishing off the drive with a 9-yard strike to A.J. Brown in the endzone.

Lastly, Hurts saved the best for the finale. After the Rams had a field goal blocked in the fourth quarter, the Eagles got the ball back at their own 9-yard line. Lead by Hurts, the Eagles marched 91-yards in 17 plays, took seven minutes off the clock and scored yet another touchdown; this time capped off by Devonta Smith.

Hurts finished the game with 226 yards through the air, three passing touchdowns, 40 yards rushing and one rushing touchdown. Compare that to Saquon’s 46 yards and 2.6 yards per carry average and it puts into perspective what Hurts was able to do on Sunday.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Jalen Hurts o39.5 Rushing Yards

Jalen Hurts

Jalen Hurts is more than capable of throwing the ball, he showed that last week; but let’s not forget what he can do on the ground. Hurts has cleared this line in seven of his last 10 games, averaging 45.6 rush yards per game. He’s also cleared this line in two of their three games this year and the Buccaneers rank 29th in rush yards allowed to quarterbacks.

Despite having a top-six rushing defense, a majority of the rushing yards the Buccaneers have given up have come to quarterbacks. The Eagles offensive line has been elite this year and despite great play, Hurts has been sacked seven times through three games.

Tampa Bay represents another top team in the NFC and a team the Eagles have struggled against in recent years. In his career, Hurts is 1-4 against the Buccaneers and just 1-2 against Baker; including two losses in the postseason. This is one of those games both the Eagles and Jalen Hurts have circled on their calendar. Look for Hurts to make an impact both through the air and on the ground this Sunday.

Baker Mayfield o219.5 Pass Yards

Baker Mayfield

Baker’s been great this year, but his numbers haven’t jumped off the page. He’s averaging 205.0 pass yards per game this year, but he’s also thrown six touchdowns and no interceptions. His quarterback rating is 99.5 and he’s already orchestrated two game winning drives in the last two minutes of games this year.

This week against the Philadelphia Eagles he’s coming into this game without his WR1, without two of his starting offensive lineman and as a 3.5-point underdog at home. Baker Mayfield as an underdog is something I am always ready to invest in. Mayfield’s hit this line in just one of his three games this year, failing to eclipse even 250 yards so far this year.

To his credit, Baker’s faced some tough secondaries in his first three weeks, going up against the Falcons, Texans and Jets; three teams ranked in the top-12 for coverage grades this year and last year. Now he faces an Eagles defense that lost two of their top three corners in the offseason and have struggled to fill the holes. Look for Baker to take advantage of that this week and try to win this game through the air.
