Analysis & Breakdown

Miami Vice
The Dolphins got their first win of the year and Mike McDaniels looks like his job is safe, for now. Miami comes into this game as a 1.5-point favorite on the road and look to build on their Monday night win. The Dolphins beat the Jets on Monday Night Football but lost their All-Pro wideout, Tyreek Hill in the process. Hill suffered a freak injury to his lower body in the third quarter and will now miss the remainder of the year.
Miami ranks 26th in total yards per game this year, Tua’s averaging just 188.0 pass yards per game and he’s thrown seven touchdowns to four interceptions. He’s completing 69.3% of his passes but that’s because a huge portion of his passes are coming at or close to the line of scrimmage. De’Von Achane is second in targets for Miami with 25 and it’s a part of this offense I expect Tua to lean on more with Hill out.
Defensively, Miami ranks 26th in points allowed, 26th in total yards allowed and 30th in rush yards allowed. The team’s pass rush ranks 28th in pressure rate but have generated eight sacks on the year. They’ve given up seven touchdowns through the air this year, with five coming against opposing wideouts.
Carolina Kitty Cats
After a dominant divisional win over the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers came out and laid an absolute dud against the Patriots. The Panthers were blown out 42-13 and the team just never got it together on either side of the ball. Drake Maye finished with 203 yards through the air, two passing touchdowns and one score on the ground. The Panthers are 30th in pressure rate this year and have generated just two total sacks (32nd).
Carolina’s bigger issue is their offense. Bryce Young was benched late in the game last week, throwing for just 150 yards on 30 pass attempts with one touchdown. Young’s now thrown for over 155 yards just once this year, averaging 188.3 yards per game with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Chubba Hubbard’s looked okay out of the backfield, but we’ve yet to see him explode for a big game this year. Rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan has looked good, coming off a matchup with one of the league’s top corners; Christian Gonzalez.

Tetairoa McMillan o64.5 Receiving Yards | BetOnline

The Panthers have so many problems this season, but the young wide receiver they took with the 8th overall pick this year ain’t one. Through four career games in the NFL, Tet’s seeing a 25% target share, he’s caught 18 of his 35 targets for 278 yards and has yet to get in the endzone. McMillan’s averaging 69.5 receiving yards per game and has cleared this line in two of his four games so far.
Tet’s a 6’5 wide receiver out of Arizona, he recorded nearly 3,500 yards receiving in his three years at the school and finished with 26 touchdowns. The Panthers drafted him in the first round this year and it’s easy to see why. McMillan comes into this game after a tough battle with one of the league’s premier cornerbacks, Christian Gonzalez. Tet saw eight targets last week, just four of them deemed ‘catchable’. On the season, of his 35 targets, just 20 have been catchable and it’s why Tet’s numbers haven’t exploded yet.
This week, the Panthers are going up against a Dolphins team that’s been graded 31st in coverage, 31st in pass rush and rank 28th in pressure rate. Young’s completing just 45% of his passes when under pressure and this Panthers offensive line hasn’t made it any easier. Now they finally get an opponent that’s had issues generating pressure, despite blitzing at one of the highest rates in the NFL.
If the Panthers can just give Young a little bit of time in the pocket, I’m expecting a big day from our boy Tet.
