Analysis & Breakdown

Sauce Gardener

How Bad is it Going to Get?

Another year in the books and it’s another year of same old New York Jets. Undisciplined football, poor clock management and issues moving the ball through the air. The Jets have fallen to 0-4 on the year and for the third straight week, were held out of the endzone until the second half. The Jets’ have struggled to move the ball in the first half of games and part of it’s because of the team’s commitment to running the ball.

New York ranks 26th this year in time of possession, 29th in third down conversion rate and 29th in passing yards per game. The team is third in rushing yards per game but that’s also why they rank 18th in yards per play and have struggled sustain long drives. Garrett Wilson is this team’s only true pass catcher and this week I’m loving his matchup.

Justin Fields has looked decent so far this year, recording 218+ passing yards in both games he was able to finish this year. He’s thrown two touchdowns, no interceptions and he’s run in three more. This week against a Cowboys team averaging 28.5 points per game, they’ll need all the offense they can get.

Dallas Doesn’t Defend

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the best offenses in football, but the problem is they’ve also got arguably the worst defense in football. In their Week 4 matchup with the Packers, Dallas became the only team in NFL history to score 40 points, record no turnovers and not ‘win’ the game. The Cowboys and Packers tied 40-40, giving us the second highest scoring game to end in a tie, ever.

Dallas is giving up 33.0 points per game (31st), allowing 420.5 total yards per game (32nd) and 297.3 pass yards per game (32nd). The defense has the 28th ranked pass rush this year and rank 28th in overall coverage grade. Dallas ranks last in yards allowed to wide receivers and have given up a league-high nine touchdowns to the position.

Offensively, the Cowboys have been unstoppable. Dak Prescott’s averaging 279.8 passing yards per game with six touchdowns this year and three interceptions. He’s coming off his best game of the year, recording 319 yards through the air, completing 78% of his passes. throwing three touchdowns and rushing for one more. Dak did all of that and the Cowboys still went home with a tie.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Garrett Wilson o62.5 Receiving Yards | BetOnline

Garrett Wilson

Garrett Wilson’s seeing a 37% target share this year and he’s basically the only wide receiver on this team. He leads the team in targets with Breece Hall coming in second and the team’s rookie tight end, Mason Taylor coming in at third. Outside of Wilson, no wide receiver has seen more than six targets. The Jets rank 27th in pass play percentage this year, passing on just 51.5% of their offensive plays.

The Cowboys also rank 28th in pass rush grade, 25th in pressure rate, 25th in pass rush win rate and have generated just four sacks on the year. Without Micah out their torturing quarterbacks, this Dallas defense looks terrible. Dallas also ranks 27th in blitz rate and it’s a huge reason why they can’t generate pressure. The Cowboys are employing zone at the 2nd highest rate of all teams this year and Wilson’s seeing a 24.7% target rate against zone coverage.

Dallas ranks last in receiving yards allowed this year and last in receiving yards allowed to wide receivers. The Cowboys are also giving up 74% of receiver production to receivers lined up out wide and Wilson’s taking 70% of his snaps on the edges. All the Jets have to do is keep Field upright this week and they might even have a shot at their first win of the year.
