Analysis & Breakdown

Short Notice

Thursday Night games are a little tough, you’ve got a short week of practice, less time to prepare and this week you’re facing an opponent you haven’t played against before. This will be Daniels’ first trip to Lambeau Field and first ever game against the Green and Gold. Last year, in a similar spot, but later in the season, the Commanders came into Thursday night off a short week with a game at Lincoln Financial on the docket. Washington would go on to lose 26-18, Daniels threw for 191 yards, one touchdown and really failed to get the ball moving.

This year, both the Packers and Commanders have the privilege of getting their ‘short week’ out of the way early in the season. Both teams should still have plenty of fresh legs and both teams will be entering this game looking to make a statement. The Commanders are coming off a trip to the NFC Championship game, anything less than that would be deemed failure.

Green Machine

The Micah Parsons’ era has officially begun in Green Bay. This defense held the Detroit Lions to just 13 points and a singular offensive touchdown; said touchdown coming with just a minute left in the game. Parsons played sparingly in his debut, still managing to get his first sack as a Green Bay Packer.

Parsons’ influence on this defense was abundantly clear in the season opener. The linebacker tandem of  Edgerrin Cooper and Quay Walker finished the game with 21 tackles, and two tackles for a loss. Lukas Van Ness finished with four combined tackles, one for a loss and a half a sack. It was Micah Parsons and the rest of this defensive line that applied enough pressure to force that interception in the 2nd quarter with Detroit on the opposing 16-yard line.

Green Bay’s defense was top 10 last year, but now with the Green Machine up front; they are formidable.

Thursday Night’s Best Bets

Commands/Packers u48.5 (-110)

Micah Parsons

Thursday Night Football and we’re rooting for defense. The Packers defensive unit looked unstoppable in Week 1, recording four sacks, allowing just 246 total yards and one touchdown. Green Bay held Detroit’s own Sonic & Knuckles to just 44 yards on the ground and a combined 2.3 yards per carry. Micah Parsons only played 30 snaps in this game.

The Packers had Goff in a straight jacket and the Lions’ run game was snuffed out every time they handed the ball off. The Packers pursuit to the ball was quick, disciplined and usually resulted in multiple people finishing the play. These are the qualities you want out of a good defense.

On the other side of the ball, we’ve got the Commanders. Washington scored just 21 points against a Giants defense that ranks near the bottom of the league and allowed 24.4 points per game last year. The Commanders also gave up three sacks and it felt like Daniels was under some sort of pressure through out the game. The Packers pass rush should see no problems getting to the quarterback in this one.

Short week, short turnaround and the Commanders are on the road at Lambeau Field. Feels like points will come at a premium in this one.

Romeo Doubs o40.5 Receiving Yards (+100)

Romeo Doubs

Last week we saw the Packers come out and just dismantle this Detroit Lions team. They won the game 27-13 and Jordan Love only threw 22 total pass attempts. Love went 16/22 for 188 yards and two touchdowns. The Packers never played from behind and it’s why we saw just glimpses of this Packers air attack.

Romeo Doubs lead all Packers’ wide receivers in snap count, lead the team in receiving yards and only had two receptions. Doubs finished the game with four targets, two receptions, 68 yards and had a potential touchdown broken up in the second half. He continues to be one of Jordan Love’s favorite targets and someone he turns to often when he needs a big play.

In Week 1 we saw Doubs lead the team in air yards, something he’s accustomed to doing; especially with Christian Watson still on the sidelines. Last year despite playing just 13 games, Doubs was 2nd in air yards for Green Bay, behind only Christian Watson. This Commanders secondary is very middle of the pack, they held Russell Wilson in check Week 1 but Wilson’s offensive line did him no favours.

Both Nabers and Robinson finished with 21 combined targets in their Week 1 loss, only 11 off those targets were ‘catchable’ targets. That shouldn’t be a problem with this Packers offense. Love completed over 70% of his passes in Week 1, was sacked zero times and the Packers offensive line looked great. As long as the offensive line holds up, I don’t see a world in which the Commanders secondary is able to keep up with this Packers’ receiving core.
