Cavaliers vs. Celtics| Analysis

Tough Time at TD Garden
The Celtics are back at TD Garden after their first road trip of the year. They’re 1-3 on the year and the team just looks completely out of sorts without Jayson Tatum out on the floor. The Celtics are averaging just 111.5 points per game (24th) and shooting 31.9% from beyond the arc (25th).
Outside of the scoring issues, the Celtics front court just isn’t built to compete in today’s NBA. They’ve constructed a rotation that lacks rebounding and defensive presence at the rim, because of it the Celtics rank 20th in opponent rebounds per game and dead last in opponent offensive rebounds per game. Boston’s giving up the most second chance points per game this year and it’s only been three games but this front court looks like it’s going to cause issues all year.
Offensively, three of the team’s five starters are shooting below 43%, both White and Pritchard are shooting below 30% from three and outside of Jaylen Brown the team’s got no reliable offensive options.
Twinning
The Cleveland Cavaliers have one of the toughest front courts in the NBA. The combination of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen has worked out great for the Cavaliers and with Mobley taking even bigger strides offensively; it’s scary to think about what’s coming. This year through just four games, Mobley’s averaging 18.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. Allen’s averaging a more modest 13.5/7.3 but both big men are averaging just under two offensive rebounds per game.
In addition to their two big men, Donovan Mitchell comes into this year hungrier than ever for a championship. Through four games this year, Mitchell’s averaging 31.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He’s shooting 56.4% from the field and 35.5% from beyond the arc. He’s averaging 8.3 free throw attempts per game and has been attacking on every possession he gets. He’s scored 31+ in three of their five games and he’s coming off a 35 point performance where he shot 72%.
You could say Mitchell’s due for some regression but this is a matchup he historically kills. Mitchell averages 30.8 points per game in his career against the Celtics and he’s scored 30+ in 12 of his 20 career games against Boston. The most recent meeting was February of this year, Mitchell scored 41 points on shooting splits of 50/42/91 and the Cavaliers cruised to an easy 123-116 win.

Evan Mobley o31.5 PRA (-120) | BetOnline

It pains me to say it, but we’re fading this Celtics front court tonight. They’ve been abysmal on the glass and on the offensive glass it gets even worse. Mobley’s only cleared this line in one of their four games this year but that has a lot more to do with the matchups he’s had, than it does with his capability as a rebounder.
Last year Mobley averaged 9.3 rebounds per game and the year prior it was 9.4. He’s going to be someone that averages a double/double this year and matchups like this one should provide ample opportunity to pump those numbers up. Against this very front court, Jalen Duren finished with 18 rebounds, Karl-Anthony Towns grabbed 13 and tonight they face an equally tough matchup.
In addition to his rebounding, Mobley’s taking on a ton more responsibility on the offensive side of the ball. Mobley’s touches on the offensive side have gone up this year, he’s passing the ball more and the Cavaliers are going to lean on him more to score the ball; especially in plus matchups like tonight. Mobley leads the Cavaliers in passes made and is averaging NINE potential assists per game so far, albeit over a very small sample size of games.
Both Duren and KAT flew over their PRA lines, finishing with 43 and 42, respectively and Boston gave up 21 PRA to Yvess Missi just two days ago; allowing both Missi and Derik Queen to hit their respective lines.
