Houston Texans

The Cardinals are in Houston this week and the Texans have won five straight games. The Treacherous Twins continue to disrupt opposing offenses and this week it’s Jacoby Brissett and this Cardinals offense on the schedule. Let’s jump right into it.

Analysis & Breakdown

Nico Collins

Texas Two-Step

It all started four weeks ago. The Texans entered the 4th quarter down 19 points to the Jaguars, at home. Davis Mills was under center and up until the 4th quarter, the offense looked completely dead. Houston got the ball back with 90 seconds left in the 3rd, down 19 points and the outlook on their season looking bleak. The Texans proceeded to score 26 unanswered points and went home with their fourth win of the year.

Including that game against Jacksonville, the Texans have now won five straight games and they’ve even done it with two different QBs. Mills secured wins against the Jaguars, Titans and Bills. Stroud returned in Week 13 and has won back to back games against the Colts and Chiefs.

Houston’s now tied with Indianapolis for 2nd place in the AFC South and both sit just one game back of the Jaguars.

None of this is possible without this Texans defense. Houston’s 1st in points allowed, 3rd in opponent pass yards, 5th in opponent rush yards and 3rd in opponent yards per play. They’ve eliminated big plays completely and the Treacherous Twins continue to wreak havoc up front.

Both Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. rank in the top five for pressure rate, win rate and sacks. The two have combined for 140 pressures, 23 sacks and both have recorded win rates over 20%. To put that into perspective, there are only five total pass rushers in the NFL with win rates over 20% and TWO of them are on this team.

Red Birds Fly Higher for Jacoby

I won’t keep going on about how much better the Cardinals are with Jacoby Brissett under center, but they’re just so much better. It hasn’t translated directly into wins but the offense looks better, their pass catchers are finally being utilized and we’ve seen them keep it close a few times over the last few weeks.

Last week wasn’t so pretty. The Cardinals got blown out by the Rams, scoring just 17 points for the 2nd straight week and losing the game by more than three touchdowns. Brissett’s thrown for over 250 yards in every single one his starts, averaging 307.4 pass yards per game. He’s completing 66.4% of his passes, he’s thrown 15 touchdowns, just 5 interceptions and has a passer rating of 95.5.

Brissett became the starter in Week 6, since then he ranks 1st in pass yards per game, 4th in touchdown passes, 1st in 1st downs, 8th highest passer rating and 4th in pass attempts of 20+ yards. Brissett’s been great, the problem is he hasn’t handled pressure well.

Despite being great against the blitz, Brissett struggles under pressure. That sounds strange but the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Tons of teams blitz, but not everyone brings presure. The Texans bring heavy pressure on every snap, but because of the guys they have up front; they don’t have to necessarily blitz all the time.

Brissett’s completion percentage drops to 45.1% when pressured and his passer rating is nearly cut in half at 57.8. The Texans bring heavy pressure on every single down so the Cardinals might be in store for a long Sunday.

Jacoby Brissett

After everything I just said about Jacoby struggling under pressure, it’s a tough prop to take; I know. Hear me out though, this line just feels too low.

Brissett’s cleared this line in all eight of his starts this year. He’s thrown 40+ passes in six of his eight starts, averaging 43.1 pass attempts per game and completing 66.4% of his passes. He’s averaging over 300 pass yards per game and the Cardinals currently ranks #1 in pass rate over expectation (PROE) this year (8.8%).

The Cardinals are a pass heavy team and a lot of that stems from the fact they play a majority of games from behind. Head Coach Jonathan Gannon is more than happy to pass the ball and this week despite the tough matchup I don’t see the gameplan changing.

Arizona’s run game ranks 26th in rush yards, averaging just 96.8 rush yards per game. Now compare that to Brissett and the fact he’s averaging over 300 yards per game and you can see why this Arizona pass game ranks 7th in the NFL.
