Cardinals vs. Buccaneers | NFL Week 13 Breakdown & Best Bets: The Red Birds Fly South

Baker Mayfield

The Cardinals are headed to Tampa Bay this week to take on Baker and his merry band of misfits. The Buccaneers have lost three straight games and look desperate to turn things around. Let’s jump right into this matchup.

Analysis & Breakdown

Emeka Egbuka

Panic Aboard the Pirate Ship

The Buccaneers season started hot. The team won five of their first six games and Baker Mayfield was being talked about like a potential Most Valuable Player this year. Since then, The Buccaneers have lost four of their next five games, Baker’s looked mediocre/hurt and this offense is missing too many pieces to count. The team’s been without Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Bucky Iriving and countless names across the offensive line.

Evans is out for the year, Godwin returned last week and we might see Bucky this week; even if it is in a limited capacity. The offensive line has their two big dogs back in Tristan Wirfs and Luke Goedeke and Sean Tucker’s really started to carve out a role in this Tampa Bay backfield.

Baker left last week’s game half way through the third quarter but still managed 19 pass attempts. He completed just 47.4% of his passes for 41 yards and finished with a passer rating of 32. In his last five games, Baker’s averaging 173.4 yards per game, completing just 58.5% of his passes with a passer rating of 74.9. He’s got 6 touchdown passes in that span and 4 interceptions.

If the Buccaneers are going to right the ship, it all starts with Baker. This week’s matchup with the Cardinals could be the perfect spot to put the pieces back together.

Jacoby Season

After a 2-0 start, the Cardinals have now lost eight of their last nine games. They’ve come close a few times, but seem to let it slip away every single time. Last week the Cardinals hosted the Jaguars and pushed the Jags to overtime on a last second field goal as time expired. The offense sputtered in overtime an the Jaguars went home with a 3-point overtime win they probably didn’t deserve.

Since the team made the move to Jacoby Brissett as the team’s full time starter, the offense has just looked so much better. Brissett’s won just 1 game this year, but the offense is averaging 23.3 points per game with him at the helm and they’ve scored 3+ touchdowns in five of his six starts.

Trey McBride’s production has exploded. In the six games with Brissett, Mcbride’s averaging 11.2 targets per game, 8.5 receptions, 87.0 yards and 10.2 yards per catch. He’s scored a touchdown in five of the six starts, being held out of the endzone in their most recent game against the Jaguars. McBride still finished with 9 catches on 10 targets for 79 yards and had a huge hand in the team even forcing overtime.

This week the Cardinals will face a Buccaneers team with their backs against the wall. I’m interested to see how Baker & Co. respond.

Sunday’s Best Bet

Trey McBride o69.5 Receiving Yards (-105) | BetOnline

Trey McBride

Let’s get chalky. After everything I just said about Trey McBride and his offensive explosion, how can we ignore the big TE. McBride’s got 522 total receiving yards over the last six weeks and has cleared this line in five of the six games. He’s garnered 9+ targets in every single one of the games and leads the team in target share with Brissett under center.

McBride’s seeing a 24.7% target share in the team’s last six games and a 33.8% first read target share. The 33.8% first read target share ranks 14th in the NFL and #1 among TEs in the span of those six weeks. The team’s scheming for McBride way more and a lot of it is because of what he’s been able to do after the catch.

McBride is 17th in the NFL in yards after catch over the team’s last six games and this week they go up against a Buccaneers squad that hasn’t really been tested by a talented TE. Even with Marvin Harrison Jr. back on the field, I’m expecting a a huge game from McBride.
