Analysis & Breakdown
Not Good, Not Terrible
The Saints have won just one game this year but it’s hard to say they haven’t looked good at points during the season. Spencer Rattler’s coming off his worst start of the year, turning the ball over FOUR times, three of which came in opponent territory. He still threw for 233 yards, two touchdowns and completed 63% of his passes. The turnovers killed their momentum and lead to 10 points directly the other way.
The Saints went on to lose the game by 12 points and honestly were in it up until the very end. New Orleans is now 1-6 on the year but the team hasn’t looked ‘as bad’ as their record suggests. Rattler’s thrown for 1,450 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions this year. Prior to last week’s game he has six touchdowns to just one interception.
Chris Olave’s averaging just under 70 receiving yards per game, he’s caught three touchdowns and has really started to develop a certain chemistry with Rattler. He’s third in the NFL in targets, 9th in receptions and is on track to have his best year in the NFL.
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
The Buccaneers looked like a completely different team last week in Detroit. Mike Evans returned to the field, Emeka Egbuka was healthy and on the field; but none of it mattered. Baker didn’t look like the MVP we watched in Weeks 1-6, completing just 56% of his passes for 228 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Despite the ugly game, Baker’s still averaging 252.3 pass yards per game, with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s got a 64% completion rate this year and even with all the injuries to his receiving core, he’s looked elite.
Speaking of injuries, Mike Evans made his return to the field — albeit short-lived. Evans went all out for a go route, landing with the defender on top of him and suffering a broken collar bone in the process. It now looks like Evans is set to miss the rest of the year and Baker’s going to have to look elsewhere to help make up for his production.
Sunday’s Best Bet
Tez Johnson o39.5 Receiving Yards (-110) | BetOnline
The receiving core for the Buccaneers has been dismantled by injuries and it’s time for some new names to step up. Enter, Tez Johnson.
Johnson’s scored in back to back weeks now, seeing nine targets last week for just four catches, 58 yards and a touchdown. Tez is 2nd in targets over the last two weeks and 2nd among all Tampa pass catchers in snap count after Mike got hurt. Chris Godwin remains on the sidelines for the Buccaneers and Emeka Egbuka will slide in to the WR1 slot.
Tez becomes this team’s de facto WR2 and we saw the Buccaneers use him in a variety of spots last week. Tez took 23 of his snaps out wide, 20 in the slot and one from the backfield. With all the injuries on the offensive side of the ball, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw more of the same this week.
He should see a significant number of snaps against Isaac Yiadom of the Saints and he’s ranked 98th of 106 cornerbacks in coverage grade. He’s allowing an 80% catch rate (98th), 17% target rate (92nd), and allowing 1.65 yards per coverage snap (100th). He’s giving up 11.8 yards per reception, has zero pass break ups and allowing a passer rating of 105.8 when targeted.
New Orleans pass rush is graded last in the NFL and they’ve not done a good job of generating pressure. If you give Baker time, he’s going to torch you. He likes this kid Tez and I’m expecting him to feed him a ton of targets moving forward.
