The upcoming NFC Divisional tilt offers the Buccaneers a chance at revenge. They hosted the Lions at Raymond James Stadium back in Week 6 and things didn’t go as planned as Detroit picked up the 20-6 victory, holding Tampa Bay to just 251 total yards and a 16.7% (2-of-12) third-down conversion rate.

Having said that, getting revenge won’t be easy at Ford Field. While the Bucs are strong 8-1 ATS on the road, they only won five of nine road games in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Lions are almost the opposite, going 7-2 SU at 5-4 ATS at Ford Field thus far. It helps that Detroit owns the fifth-best offense with the seventh-best scoring margin at home in the league.

Even though the Buccaneers were decent on the road during the regular season, they struggled against winning teams. When it comes to away games, Tampa Bay went 2-4 SU against teams that finished the season with a winning record compared to 3-0 vs. sub-.500 teams.

Do the Buccaneers have what it takes to defeat the Lions? Tampa Bay struggled with above-.500 teams throughout the 2023 regular season.

Another thing that’s going against the Buccaneers is their inability to defend the pass. They’re surrendering 248.1 passing yards per game (27th) on a 66.4% completion rate (24th), which both jump up to 269.0 (29th) and 69.8% (26th) on the road.

The Lions’ high-flying offense  — which averages a whopping 268.6 passing yards at home (6th) — is likely licking their chops at this matchup. Detroit isn’t afraid to air out the ball and QB Jared Goff likely won’t waste any time targeting the likes of Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, Josh Reynolds, and more.

The Buccaneers’ offense has its fair share of playmakers, however, the team hasn’t been inconsistent when it comes to putting up points lately. Sure, Tampa Bay scored 32 against Philadelphia in the Wild Card Round, but the team was held to only 13 and 9 points in the two games before that. In other words, time will tell if the Bucs’ last showing was indicative of their skill or if they just got lucky against an imploding Eagles team.

Anything can happen in the NFL playoffs, but the Lions have too much momentum to be slowed down. They’re playing like championship contenders — especially at Ford Field — and have a passing game that can put the Buccaneers on their heels early on. As long as Dan Campbell’s players stick to what’s been working, Detroit will send the raucous crowd home with an NFC Championship Game to look forward to next weekend.

As for the best bet, let’s go with Detroit covering the spread. Yes, the Buccaneers are 8-1 ATS on the road, but they’re also an abysmal 4-11 ATS in their last 15 meetings with the Lions, who boast a plus-8.0 average scoring margin at Ford Field. On top of that, Detroit went a perfect 4-0 ATS against the NFC South during the regular season.

After beating the Bucs by 14 points earlier this season, I’m confident that the Lions can win by at least a touchdown on Sunday.
