Analysis & Breakdown

Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield & the Bucs look to stay undefeated

Ice in his Veins

The Buccaneers have five wins this year, four of which basically came on the last possession of the game. Wins over the Jets, Falcons, Texans, and Seahawks were all decided within the last minute of the game. Baker’s had six series when playing from behind in the fourth quarter, in these six series he’s gone 17/23 for 239 yards a two touchdowns. He lives for the endgame and this week he gets his #1 target back.

Tampa Bay has been decimated by injuries this year. Despite getting Mike Evans back this week, the team will once again be without both Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka. Bucky Irving remains on the sidelines and their right tackle Luke Goedeke remains on the IR. Even with all the injuries, the Buccaneers are 5-1 and rolling into Detroit as leaders of the NFC.

This game could very well determine who gets home field in the playoffs so I’m expecting both teams to come out and play with a postseason type of mentality.

Lions or Big Cats?

The Lions are 4-2 and coming off an ugly loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team finished with just 297 total yards of offense, scored 17 points and surrendered 30 to Patty Mahomes and Co. Detroit ranks 20th in points allowed this year, 24th in defensive redzone efficiency, 22nd in opponent third down conversion and 17th in pass yards allowed. Mahomes carved them up for 257 yards and thee touchdowns through the air last week.

This week the Lions’ will be without DJ Reid, Terrion Arnold and Kerby Joseph due to injury; Brian Branch is out due to suspension and nickel corner Avonte Maddox is also hurt. That’s five of the Lions top defensive backs that’ll be missing for this Monday Night matchup with Baker.

Offensively, the Lions have bee elite. They rank 2nd in points scored, 3rd in redzone efficiency, 8th in rush yards and 13 in pass yards. Detroit’s scored 34+ points in four of their six games this year and average 43 points per game at home this year.

Jared Goff’s been so much better at home too, he’s got seven touchdown passes to one interception in just two games. Compare that to seven touchdowns and one interception in FOUR road games. Last year it was more of the same, 21 touchdowns at home, 16 on the road. In 2023 it was 19 touchdowns at home, 11 on the road. Since joining the Lions, Goff’s averaging 268.7 yards per game with 83 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in 36 home games. On the road he’s got 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans

Mike Evans is back and no one is more excited than Baker Mayfield. Evans has recorded 11 straight 1,000 yard seasons and it’s not by accident. He’s been one, if not the MOST consistent receiver over the last decade and he’s ton it with a ton of different QBs too. When you take a look at the list of guys he’s played with, what he’s done looks even more impressive.

Evans started his career with Josh McCown under center, spent time playing Mike Glennon, Jameis Winston, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Blaine Gabbert. The last few years he’s been blessed with Tom Brady, a Super Bowl ring and now Baker Mayfield. In 34 games with Baker under center, Evans is averaging over 70 yards per game, he’s caught 25 touchdowns and averages 8.1 targets per game.

This year he’s only played in three of the Buccaneers games, didn’t finish the game against the Jets and still leads the team in redzone targets. Mike was targeted 28 times in his three games this year, seeing a 29% target share and got into the endzone against New York before getting hurt. This week he lines up against a Lions’ secondary that’s been decimated by injuries and alongside a receiving room that’s missing bodies.

I’m expecting a high target share for Mike today and I love the price tag on his touchdown.
