Bills vs. Steelers | NFL Week 13 Breakdown & Best Bets: Cold War in the Northeast

Darnell Washington

Both the Bills and Steelers come into Week 13 after ugly losses last week. Both teams are in the thick of the AFC Playoff hunt and neither one can afford to keep taking losses with the race getting tighter every week. Let’s jump right into it.

Analysis & Breakdown

Aaron Rodgers

Bills, Wings & Tables

The Buffalo Bills started the season a perfect 4-0. The team looked great and Josh Allen looked like he was running away with the Most Valuable Player Award, early. Since then, the Bills have lost four of their last seven games, including two divisional losses to the Patriots and Dolphins. They’ve lost two of their last three games and now with a trip to Pittsburgh on the docket, it’s not getting any easier.

The Bills offense ranks 5th in points scored, 9th in pass yards, 2nd in rush yards and 3rd in yards per play. They convert 63.2% of their redzone trips into touchdowns (8th) and average 3.5 touchdowns per game (3rd). The Bills have had a few issues this year but none bigger than this run defense.

Buffalo ranks 30th in rush yards allowed, allowing 148.9 per game; 117.8 of which come from opposing backs. Starting DT Ed Oliver’s been out a majority of the year and with him still sidelined I don’t see how they fix this problem. The Bills have also had issues taking care of the ball. They rank 23rd in turnovers this year, with 15 total turnovers.

Josh Allen is responsible for 11 of those 15 turnovers. He’s thrown 9 interceptions and lost 2 fumbles in the Bills’ 11 games this year. Five of those interceptions came in the last 3 weeks, a span of time in which Allen was also sacked 11 times. This week the reigning MVP will be without two of the best offensive takcles in the NFL; Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown.

Discount Double Check

Aaron Rodgers is back under center for the Pittsburgh Steelers and it couldn’t come soon enough. Mason Rudolph stepped in last week for the Steelers and almost got a win over the Bears, coming up just short in the end. The offense struggled to move the ball through the air and a big reason was the fact that Rodgers wasn’t the one taking the snaps.

At 41 years old, Aaron Rodgers is averaging 196.9 pass yards per game, he’s thrown 19 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Rodgers is completing 66.4% of his passes this year but it still feels like this offense hasn’t fully been unlocked. This week the Steelers are in need of a win, both for their playoff hopes but also to build on their lead in the AFC North.

Pittsburgh is currently the only team in the AFC North with a winning record and that’s because both the Bengals and Ravens have already played their games. The Ravens entered Week 13 tied with the Steelers but after a loss to the Bengals on Thanksgiving, the Steelers have a chance to create some breathing room with a win over Buffalo.

With how good the AFC has been this year, their might only be one team from the AFC North being represented and that’ll be whoever wins this division. If Pittsburgh wants to make a splash in the postseason this year, this game means everything.

Sunday’s Best Bet

Darnell Washington o1.5 Receptions (-130) | BetOnline

Darnell Washington

This one’s strange, even though we did cash in on his touchdown earlier this year. Darnell Washington is a 6’7, 264 pound TE and former Georgia Bulldog. The Steelers drafted him in the third down back in 2023 and now he’s listed as the team’s TE1. Washington has out-snapped both Pat Friermuth and Jonnu Smith in four of the team’s last five games and he’s cleared this line in six of his last eight games.

Washington’s also recorded 5+ targets in four of of his last six games with Rodgers under center and this week with the 41-year old back, I’m expecting Washington’s big frame and ability after the catch to pay dividends. He averages 6.9 yards after the catch, per reception this year; 3rd best among TEs.

Buffalo’s been graded as the NFL’s worst tackling team this year and currently have missed the 8th most tackles in the NFL. Washington’s a big boy and he’s been a tough to tackle. With the Bills struggles on that side of the ball, it makes me think you’ve gotta toss a couple check downs to the big man and really test this Bills defense.
