Analysis & Breakdown

Is Drake Maye really as good as he's been? Our expert breaks it down with his New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons preview and picks.

Ice Maye

Drake Maye is the truth. Maye is 1st in passing yards, 1st in passer rating, 1st in completion percentage, 2nd in yards per attempt and 1st in first downs generated. His 20 passing touchdowns are good enough for 4th most in the NFL and he’s got the 4th highest passer grade of all Quarterbacks. Maye’s helped the Patriots to a 9-2 record, he’s averaging 257.8 yards per game with a passer rating of 113.2 and has thrown just 5 interceptions.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of Maye’s play has been Stefon Diggs. After a quiet few weeks to start the season, Diggs now leads the team with a 23.2% target share and has caught 59 balls for 659 yards and 3 touchdowns. The emergence of TreVeyon Henderson ver the last couple weeks has been amazing to see.

After three games without Rhamondre Stevenson, Henderson now leads the Patriots backfield in rush yards, recording 264 total rush yards over the last three weeks, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He’s also been great in the pass game, catching 10 of his 12 targets for 66 total receiving yards and 1 touchdown. Henderson’s scored five touchdowns in these three games, all five coming over the last two weeks.

Defensively the Patriots have been good, but also haven’t faced a ton of great offenses. They rank 5th in points allowed and 1st in opponent rush yards; it’s in the redzone where they run into issues. New England ranks 31st in opponent redzone efficiency, allowing opponents to convert 72% of their redzone drives into touchdowns.

The Pats have been great this year and this week they’ll face a Bengals team without their top weapon; Ja’Marr Chase.

Spit-Gate

The Bengals come into this week’s matchup after a beat down at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. Cincinnati will be without Ja’Marr Chase as he serves a 1-game suspension for spitting at Jalen Ramsey last week. Chase said he didn’t do it, the live video feed showed something different. Nonetheless, the Bengals enter this week’s matchup once again in ‘must-win’ mode.

After the Chase suspension, the Bengals did get a tad bit of good news; Joe Burrow was a full participant at practice. Despite initial reports indicating Burrow may be back in Week 13,  Head Coach Zac Taylor hasn’t ruled out a potential return to the field this week.

As it stands right now, the Bengals are 3-games behind the Steelers for top spot in the division. The only way the Bengals could make the playoffs is with an outright divisional win, which is somehow still possible. With two games left against the Ravens, one against the Browns and already having a win against Pittsburgh; theoretically the Bengals are still in the hunt.

All of that could end this week if the Bengals go home with their eighth loss of the year.

Sunday’s Best Bets

Hunter Henry o39.5 Receiving Yards (-110) | BetOnline

Not the flashiest name on the Patriots roster, but Hunter Henry has been great for them this year. The 30-year old TE’s averaging 38.4 receiving yards per game, he’s got 34 catches and four of them have ended up in the endzone. Henry’s second on this team in target share and this week he faces a Bengals defense that ranks dead last against TEs.

The Bengals are allowing 80.2 yards per game to opposing TEs and Henry’s seen 6+ targets in 2 of his last 3 games; clearing this line in both of those games. The Bengals LB crew leaves a ton to be desired. Both Knight and Carter rank as the bottom two graded LBs this year, both with coverage grades below 50.

These two have been torched by opposing TEs all year, allowing both Darnell Washington and Colston Loveland to post career highs over the last two weeks.
