Analysis & Breakdown

Tee Higgins

New and Improved?

The Denver Broncos entered this season with a ton of hype. After winning 10-games and leading the Broncos back to the playoffs last season, it felt like the Broncos had found their new quarterback; Bo Nix. However, they’ve sputtered out of the gates, losing two of their first three games this year. After a dominant win over the Titans in Week 1, the Broncos went on the road for back to back games; losing to both the Colts and Chargers in one score games.

Denver’s defense has been good, but not at the same level we saw last year. The offense has been good, but again not as good as last year. Nix is averaging just 178.3 yards through the air this year, with five touchdowns but also three interceptions. On the defensive side, the Broncos are giving up 21.3 points per game but have the #1 ranked red zone defense.

This week’s matchup with the beat up Bengals feels like the perfect ‘get right’ spot for the Broncos.

Browning or Bust

Another season for the Bengals and it’s another season ruined by major injuries. With Joe Burrow sidelined until at least December, it’ll be Jake Browning under center for the Bengals. Last week, in his first start of the season, Browning looked bad. He threw the ball 27 times, completed 70% of his passes for just 140 yards and threw two interceptions. The Bengals lost 48-10 and the offense looked anemic.

When he entered the game in Week 2, Browning completed 66% of his passes for 241 yards, but again struggled with turnovers; throwing three interceptions. Browning’s now got three touchdown passes on the year but five interceptions. This week the Bengals will face one of the toughest secondaries in the league and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year; Patrick Surtain.

The Bengals rank 25th in pass blocking grade this year and have given up 10 sacks on the year; the Broncos pass rush ranks 10th in the league and has generated the fifth most sacks in the league (12.0). Browning might be in for some trouble this week in Denver.

Monday Night’s Best Bets

Courtland Sutton Anytime Touchdown (+140)

Last year Courtland Sutton finished the year 7th in redzone targets, this year he’s only seen two. Most of that has to do with the fact the Broncos have only made eight total trip to the redzone this year. The Broncos offense has put up points, but they’ve also faced some good defenses so far through three weeks, that all finishes this week again Cincinnati.

The Bengals rank 29th in touchdowns allowed this year, 28th in points allowed and 21st in redzone efficiency. Through three weeks, Sutton leads the team with a 23% target share; hauling in 13 of his 21 targets for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Last year Sutton saw 25% of the team’s targets and he’s on pace to match that same output. He finished the year with 1,081 yards, 81 catches and eight touchdowns.

This week Sutton’s lined up against one of the worse secondaries in the league, ranking 25th in receiving yards allowed and a team Sutton’s scored against in two of their three matchups.

Patrick Surtain Interception (+500)

Patrick Surtain

We’re taking a shot at some value here with Surtain. Surtain hasn’t recorded a single interception this year and Browning’s handing them out like Christmas gifts. Browning’s been terrible under pressure this year, grading as one of the worst quarterbacks in the league with four of his five interceptions coming when under pressure.

The Broncos rank 5th in sacks this year, with both of their defensive ends ranking in the top-20 for pressures generated. Browning’s in for a tough night tonight and he’s a quarterback that we’ve seen rely on his top two receivers. I’m just looking for Browning to make one mistake today and give our boy Patrick a chance at an interception.
