49ers vs. Rams Analysis & Breakdown

We’re just two weeks deep into the NFL season and the injury bug has run amok. Both the Rams and the 49ers are missing multiple players on both sides of the ball, and both teams are missing big names on the offense.
The Rams lost Puka Nacua in Week 1 and saw their other star wideout, Cooper Kup, go down in Week 2.
The 49ers have been without their starting running back, Christian McCaffrey all season due to an inflamed hamstring, and now will be without Deebo Samuel for a few weeks due a calf injury.
It was just announced today that starting tight end for the 49ers, George Kittle, sat out practice on Thursday with a hamstring issue; his status for Sunday is now up in the air.
With such a big void left on both rosters, it’ll be interesting to see who steps up to fill in.

The 49ers offense has been absolutely decimated by injury and now with George Kittle also questionable for Sunday, it’s time to talk about who I think will see the biggest jump in volume; Mr. Brandon Aiyuk.
Last week, in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the Niners scored just 17 points and both Deebo/Kittle combined for 18 targets. Those 18 targets equated to 50% of Purdy’s pass attempts with 54% of his completions going to those same 2 guys.
Aiyuk missed all of training camp and the entirety of the pre-season due to contract negotiations with the 49ers. We’ve seen how much players in similar situations have struggled this year due to the lack of practice.
Less practice means fewer reps, fewer reps is what lead’s to the timing issues and a lack of connection between a quarterback and his receivers. It’s also why both Kittle and Samuel have seen 32 combined targets through two weeks; they were present at training camp.
We saw this on full display in Weeks 1 and 2; Aiyuk saw 5 targets but caught just 2 passes for 28 yards, even dropping an easy touchdown. In Week 2 Aiyuk followed it up by catching 4 of his 5 targets for 43 yards in a loss to the Vikings.
Now with no Deebo, no McCaffrey and potentially no Kittle; it’s time for Aiyuk to step up take charge.

Purdy and the Niners decimated the Rams in his only game against them last year.
With so many offensive pieces missing for Purdy, I get the feeling we could see some tipped balls, and maybe even some timing issues between Purdy and the next guys up. I know that Kittle’s status is still questionable, but even if he plays I like this prop.
Purdy started 16 games last year, threw 31 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. He failed to record an interception against Los Angeles last year, but this year it’s a very different situation. The Niners enter this game on the road, against a Rams team that is desperate not to go 0-2.
Purdy will be without McCaffrey and without Deebo Samuel this week; two of his biggest weapons on this offense. In a divisional game, on the road, and against a team hungry for their first win of the year. Look for the defense to step up and get us the 1 interception we need.
