I have been thinking about the NFL futures market all week and how much I despise this award. Why do I dislike it so much? Because we all know the MVP has become a quarterback award, and I cannot stand that. People love to say, “Well, position players get Offensive Player of the Year.” That is not the same thing. That is just second place. This year I am taking a stand. If this award continues to only go to quarterbacks, it needs to change its name to something other than “MVP.”

Since 2000, 22 of the 26 MVP winners have been quarterbacks. For those checking the math, 2003 had co-winners. The four others were running backs. Over time, that position has lost respect, and I think one man deserves to bring it back into the conversation: Jonathan Taylor. The Colts running back is leading the charge for one of the most exciting teams in football right now.

Where is the Taylor Love?

The six-year pro has been on an absolute tear and shows no signs of slowing down. He currently leads the league in carries, rushing yards, and touchdowns. Through eight games, Taylor already has four games with three touchdowns. He is on pace for roughly 30 touchdowns this season. The single-season record is 31, set by LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006.

Baseball fans were making the argument for Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh to win AL MVP if he broke Aaron Judge’s home run record. He did not surpass Judge, but that same logic should apply here. If Taylor breaks a 19-year touchdown record, he deserves to be in the MVP conversation.

The path is there. Over the next two weeks, Taylor faces a Steelers defense ranked 18th against the run and a Falcons defense ranked 21st. Both are great opportunities for him to pad his stats. After that, the schedule gets tougher, but Taylor remains one of the league’s most dominant backs and can produce against anyone.

The Value

I grabbed Taylor at +1800 two days ago. For how well he is performing and how open this race feels, that is tremendous value. In my eyes, he should already be among the top three in odds. No quarterback has separated himself, and yet Taylor’s price says longshot. I say it says lack of respect. If the MVP is only going to honor quarterbacks, call it what it is: the “Gun Slinger Award.” Until then, why not change the narrative and give it to a running back who is dominating the league?

The MVP award is supposed to recognize the player most valuable to his team, not just the best quarterback in the league. Jonathan Taylor embodies value in every sense. He carries the Colts offense, changes the way defenses prepare, and does it all with consistency and power. If he keeps this pace, the voters will have no choice but to take notice. It is time to reward production over position and redefine what “Most Valuable Player” truly means. If Taylor breaks the record, there should be no debate, the MVP belongs in Indianapolis.
