Western Kentucky vs. Louisiana Tech – October 21
Welcome into Week 8 of college football, but more importantly, welcome into midweek college football. The midweek grind is the absolute best. Tonight we get a good old-fashioned Conference USA matchup between the 5-2 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers and the 4-2 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The last time these two met was November 16, 2024, when Louisiana Tech pulled off a 12-7 upset as 11.5-point underdogs. Both teams enter tonight off tough losses and are looking to get back in the win column.
In this spot, I am not focused on a side or a total. I am all over a player prop. I am backing Western Kentucky quarterback Maverick McIvor to go over 256.5 passing yards. The 6-foot-2 gunslinger has not cleared 250 yards in three straight games, but when he does, he tends to explode, topping 300 yards each time. This season, he has gone over this mark three times, each performance resulting in 300-plus yards through the air.
Sling that Pill!
The Hilltoppers average nearly 40 pass attempts per game, ranking 12th in the country. On the road, they are still slinging it, averaging around 36 attempts. They also rank 21st nationally in passing offense with over 275 yards per game. Louisiana Tech’s secondary, meanwhile, has been generous, allowing the 20th most passing yards per game at nearly 270. At home, that number jumps to 336 yards per contest, fifth most in the country.
The Bulldogs have hosted only two games this season, which inflates the average, but the numbers still stand out. Southern Miss threw for 392 yards in Ruston despite ranking just 67th in pass attempts per game. Before that, New Mexico State tallied 283 yards through the air, right in line with its season average.
After a brutal loss to Florida International, McIvor and the Hilltoppers should come out with a chip on their shoulder, ready to sling it and return to their high-flying, air raid identity. With Louisiana Tech ranking top 20 in rushing yards allowed per game, this sets up perfectly for McIvor to air it out early and often.
Western Kentucky needs a bounce-back performance, and this is the ideal spot. McIvor has the arm talent and volume to exploit a Louisiana Tech defense that has struggled mightily against the pass, especially at home. The Hilltoppers thrive when they push tempo and attack through the air, and this matchup gives them every reason to do exactly that. Expect McIvor to find his rhythm early and lead a strong night for the Hilltoppers passing attack.
Best Bet: Maverick McIvor Over 256.5 Pass Yards (-115) odds via BetOnline
