Virginia vs. Cal – November 1
One week ago, the Virginia Cavaliers were at North Carolina and won 17-16 in overtime, after the Tar Heels went for the win and came up short on the two-point conversion. North Carolina outgained Virginia in almost every aspect of the game, nearly 100 total yards more than the Cavaliers. If it were not for some key turnovers, the Tar Heels would have secured their third win of the season. In my opinion, North Carolina, despite losing the turnover battle, should have came out on top in that matchup.
That is why the Cal Golden Bears were the first bet I placed for Week 10. Unfortunately, I locked in Cal too early, as they are now +5.5 and I got +4.5. I am not too concerned, as I think they still have a good chance to pull off the win against the Cavaliers. Unlike Virginia, Cal is coming off a tough road loss to Virginia Tech. Returning home and regrouping should allow this team to bounce back.
Letdown City, Virginia
Additionally, the amount of travel Virginia faces before tomorrow’s kickoff cannot be ignored. Last week in Chapel Hill, then back home, and now traveling across the country to play Cal on the West Coast is a significant strain. Combine that with coming off an undeserved win, and it is a recipe for trouble.
If Cal can limit Virginia’s run game, they should be able to keep this contest close. The Golden Bears rank 91st in rush yards allowed per game, but they are 33rd in pass yards allowed per game. If they can identify and exploit their strengths while containing a Cavaliers team that runs the ball over 50 percent of the time, they have a real chance to come out on top.
On the other side, Cal boasts an impressive passing attack that should expose Virginia’s secondary. Cal ranks 15th in pass play percentage, throwing on over 56 percent of plays, and 45th in passing yards per game, averaging nearly 250 yards. Virginia struggles against the pass, ranking 91st in opponent completion percentage and 75th in pass yards allowed per game. This matchup sets up perfectly for Cal to exploit a clear weakness.
This game sets up perfectly for Cal to bounce back. Virginia is traveling across the country after a narrow, undeserved win and will face a Golden Bears team eager to regroup at home. If Cal can contain the Cavaliers’ run game and force them to rely on passing, they have a strong chance to stay competitive. Meanwhile, Cal’s own passing attack is poised to exploit Virginia’s weak secondary. The matchup favors a smart, disciplined Cal offense and a defense focused on key stops. Expect a close game, but all signs point to Cal keeping this one in reach.
