#9 Vanderbilt vs. #20 Texas Picks and Predictions: Commodores Head to Austin

Can Pavia keep the magic going in Austin this weekend? Vanderbilt Texas Picks

Another big SEC battle happens in Austin as the No. 20 Texas Longhorns try to stop Diego Pavia and the No. 9 Vanderbilt Commodores. It seems as if nothing can bring them down at the moment, however they did struggle in their other road SEC matchup against Alabama. Sure, they beat a South Carolina team in Columbia that was ranked No. 11 at the time, but LaNorris Sellers didn’t play much and we know the Gamecocks are not a top 15 team in the country. This will be a real test for Vandy, so let’s get into our favorite picks and find out what’s going down. Are the Longhorns favored for a reason?

#9 Vanderbilt Commodores vs. #20 Texas Longhorns NCAA Football Insights

This is the fourth straight ranked matchup for the Commodores. After losing to No. 10 Alabama, they beat a pair of tigers, taking down No. 10 LSU and No. 15 Missouri, but both games were in Nashville. Now they head to Austin, where the Longhorns would love nothing more than to shut down Pavia’ miraculous season. Both are still 3-1 in SEC play, although Texas has an extra loss on their overall record. Point being, the College Football Playoff is still potentially in play for both teams.

It’s certainly a possibility for Vanderbilt, but Texas still has a few chances to wow the committee. They play No. 5 Georgia in Athens and host No. 3 Texas A&M. Three top 10 wins to end the season, and a 4-1 record against top 10 teams would certainly look great for a two loss Texas team. But in order for that to happen, they have to get by Pavia at home.

Now, Texas is coming off two overtime victories after their win in the Red River Rivalry, and Arch Manning looks to be on track to start this game. But is that the best option for the Longhorns? Are we really convinced that he gives them the best shot to win?

Vanderbilt is 7-1 on the year and 6-2 against the spread this season. With their 6-2 record, the Longhorns are only 2-6 at covering the spread, failing to do so in three of four single digit spreads. I think the Commodores keep things rolling, but Texas might be able to slow them down in the first half.

In three road games this season, the Commodores have scored just 10, 14 and 14 points in the first half, against Virginia Tech, South Carolina and Alabama. Despite scoring over 18 points per first half this season, that number drops way down to just 12.7 on the road. The Texas defense is third in the nation in yards per carry allowed, giving up less than 2.5 per touch. In the secondary, they are top 30 in yards per pass allowed as well. As for first half scoring defense, the Longhorns are No. 13 in the country giving up just 8.3 per first half, dropping that number to just 3.3 at home. Pavia could be rattled early in the game on Saturday in a hostile environment.

I do not trust the Longhorns offense to do anything really, but I do think their defense comes fired up at home, ready to spoil Pavia’s season. However, Vandy should make some second half adjustments to pull out yet another win.
