Tulane vs. UTSA Picks and Predictions: AAC Showdown in the Alamodome

Sam Howard has 31 tackles and one forced fumble this year for Tulane - Tulane UTSA Picks

Thursday Night Football is exciting in the NFL as Lamar Jackson makes his return for the Ravens against the Dolphins, but you know me, I’ll be watching a couple of unranked college teams going head to head on another screen. The Tulane Green Wave try to keep their undefeated conference record going as they head to Texas to take on the UTSA Roadrunners. Let’s get into our favorite picks and see if Jon Sumrall’s team can keep the momentum moving in the right direction following a bye week.

Tulane Green Wave vs. UTSA Roadrunners NCAA Football Insights

UTSA is sitting at 3-4 on the year and just 1-2 in American play. They opened up with two losses to Texas A&M and Texas State, giving up 42 and 43 points in each game. Then they battled for two wins against Incarnate Word and Colorado State before losing on the road to Temple. After that, they blew out Rice, and were demolished by North Texas, giving up 55 points to the Mean Green. Now the Green Wave come to town.

Tulane has been great. They are off to a 6-1 start with Power Four wins over Northwestern and Duke, both of whom have winning records this season. Sure, they were blown out by Ole Miss in Oxford, but the Rebels are clearly one of the best teams in the country. They’ve handled business against Tulsa, East Carolina and Army, winning all three AAC matchups but only covered against the Golden Hurricane. Will they be able to run it up against the Roadrunners?

Shoutout to BetOnline for giving us the best number on the market, as this is priced at 30.5 elsewhere, sometimes for even more juice. The Tulane Green Wave offense is churning. They are one of two undefeated teams in the AAC, and they control their own destiny. Could they be looking ahead to their matchup with Memphis next week? Possibly, but UTSA can’t stop a runny nose.

With both teams coming off a bye, I am not worried about Tulane looking ahead. They know they can’t afford to drop this game, and the line has even moved in their direction as well, indicating the books think they get the job done. UTSA gave up an average of 46.7 points to Texas A&M, Texas State and North Texas. The Green Wave offense is in that same caliber (compared to the rest of the Roadrunner’s opponents). Plus, they’ve score 30+ in two of three road games this year, both against unranked, inferior opponents.

Tulane Offensive Firepower

Tulane ranks top 35 in the nation in yards per play, yards per carry, and third down conversion rate. Jake Retzlaff takes great care of the football, with just one pick and 14 total touchdowns this season. They should be able to do whatever they please on the ground (or in the air). The Roadrunners rank north of 100 (bottom 36) in points per game (32.7) and yards per pass (8.1), while ranking No. 87 in yards per rush allowed as well, letting opponents go for 4.5 yards per carry. UTSA is bottom 20 in opponent interception percentage, leading me to think Tulane could open up the passing game tonight, moving the ball in chunks.

Offensively, UTSA is bottom 20 in yards per pass, but are top 10 in yards per rush. All they can do is run it, and the Green Wave rank top 50 in yards allowed per rush. The Roadrunners won’t convert many third downs, ranking No. 109 (bottom 30) in third down conversion rate, giving the ball back to Tulane, only to score more points.
