#11 Tulane vs. #6 Ole Miss Early Odds and Leans: College Football Playoff First Round

Jon Sumrall and Tulane made the field of 12 for this year's College Football Playoff - Tulane Ole Miss Early Odds

The College Football Playoff is set and we have about 10 days before the action gets started. Let’s take a look at the early odds for one of the two rematches in the first round of the playoff. The No. 11 Tulane Green Wave won the American Athletic Conference, thus giving them a spot in the field of 12. Unfortunately, for them, they head back to Oxford where they take on the No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels. But could Lane Kiffin’s departure impact this contest? Let’s look at the early odds and find our spots in this game.

#11 Tulane Green Wave vs. #6 Ole Miss Rebels NCAA Football Insights

Jake Retzlaff and Tulane face Ole Miss for a second time this season - Tulane Ole Miss Early Odds

Jake Retzlaff and Tulane face Ole Miss for a second time this season

As I said, this is a rematch. We saw these two teams go head to head in this exact stadium in Week 4, where the Rebels handed the Green Wave their first loss of the season, after winning three straight and two over Power Four opponents. Ole Miss stomped the Green Wave, beating them 45-10, including scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter. The Rebels gained over 500 yards of offense compared to Tulane, who managed less than 300 total.

The Green Wave trotted out two quarterbacks to sling the pill, combining for just 104 yards through the air. We knew Tulane was a run first team anyways, but that’s all they could do against Ole Miss. I’m not sure anything will be different with their defensive coordinator calling all of the shots. We have to salute Jon Sumrall for coaching the Green Wave through the CFP since they made the field, but you’ve got to think he’s already somewhat checked out, as he will face much tougher challenges next year as the head coach of Florida.

#11 Tulane vs. #6 Ole Miss NCAA Football Early Leans

Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels have a rematch against Tulane in the first round of the CFP - Tulane Ole Miss Early Odds

Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels have a rematch against Tulane in the first round of the CFP

If you like Ole Miss, get them now. This line has already ticked up from opening, crossing over that key number of 17. I do not see it coming back down, but it might not matter. The Rebels beat them by 35 when Tulane came to Oxford in September, and even without Lane Kiffin leading the team, talent-wise, it isn’t even close.

Ole Miss is one of the highest powered offenses in all of college football, and they have some dangerous intangibles that no one else in this field has. The Rebels just had a historic season, but their coach still chose to leave, for a rival school in the conference, where he clearly sees the grass as greener. By leaving, Kiffin potentially ignited a fire that cannot be contained in the Rebel’s locker room.

This team has the chance to send a message in a couple ways. Personally, a deep run in these playoffs would be the biggest middle finger to Lane Kiffin, and deservedly so. There’s no better way to stick it to your former coach by proving to him (and everyone) that they don’t need him. Which brings me to my second message. Trinidad Chambliss is a former D-2 product who was supposed to be the Rebels’ back up QB this year. After Austin Simmons got injured early, Chambliss stepped up and won 11 games for the Rebels, losing only to the Georgia Bulldogs on the road after putting up 35 points in the first three quarters. This is a chance for the team to prove to America, that they are more than just their head coach.

Ole Miss are already looking ahead to a potential revenge spot against the Dawgs in the quarterfinals, because they will likely beat the brakes off of Tulane for a second time this season.
