Tulane vs. Memphis Picks and Predictions: Huge AAC Implications in This Showdown

Brendon Lewis and Memphis host Navy to close out their AAC regular season - Navy Memphis Picks

The American Athletic Conference will have plenty of college football fans’ eyeballs on them tonight as the Memphis Tigers host the Tulane Green Wave in a game that could have some serious College Football Playoff implications. It is widely accepted that whomever wins the American Conference Championship will be the Group of 5 representative in the CFP, and both of these teams have just one conference loss, meaning coming up short tonight likely ends all hope of making the 12 team playoff. Let’s get into our favorite picks to see what might happen between the two teams.

Tulane Green Wave vs. Memphis Tigers NCAA Football Insights

This line has been ticking down and for good reason. Memphis opened laying more than a touchdown, but it has since been bought all way down to just a field goal plus the hook. The reason for this is the status of Brendon Lewis, the Tigers’ quarterback, who may not be available tonight. However, there has been some indication that this line movement is similar to when the Tigers faced South Florida, where they won outright as an underdog. That week, Lewis’ status was questionable, their head coach didn’t say much about his availability, and then boom, he played like nothing was ever wrong.

This week, it is eerily similar. Memphis is not letting anyone (including the media) know if Lewis will actually be playing, but I am leaning towards him seeing the field. Because of this, I’ll lean with the Tigers to get the job done. The fact that this line has moved all the way down to a field goal but won’t get rid of the hook is an indication to me that Memphis still wins by a touchdown at least. However, we are going to be taking a player prop from the other sideline.

Tulane vs. Memphis NCAA Football Picks and Predictions

Jake Retzlaff leads the Tulane offense in carries and rushing yards this season - Tulane Memphis Picks

Jake Retzlaff leads the Tulane offense in carries, rushing yards and touchdowns this season

Tulane vs. Memphis Prediction: Memphis Wins & Covers, Over 54

Best Bet: Jake Retzlaff (Tulane) Over 49.5 Rushing Yards (-114) BetOnline

Give me Mr. Retzlaff to use his legs. Yes, he has been running less recently, but the man still leads the Green Wave in carries, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. He accounts for over 37% of the team’s yards on the ground, and has nine of their 14 rushing touchdowns as well. Tulane runs the ball a ton, over 55% of the time, and I see them making the Tiger’s rushing defense earn their keep.

Usually the Tigers only see about 46% of plays coming on the ground, tonight their trench unit will be under attack for the entire game, and they already give up four yards per carry to opponents. Retzlaff has cleared this number in six of eight games this year, and has had 60+ yards in five of eight, including his last two, doing so with less than double digit carries. We’ve also seen mobile quarterbacks like Retzlaff have tons of success against the Tigers.

Taylen Green of Arkansas had 12 carries for 53 yards, busting out an 18 yard rush and Byrum Brown of South Florida tore apart the Tiger’s defense, going for 121 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns, including a 44 yard rush. Even Rice and Florida Atlantic’s quarterbacks were the team’s leading rusher when facing Memphis.

It will be no different for Retzlaff tonight.
