Temple vs. #18 Georgia Tech – September 20
College sports run high on emotion, and there may be nothing bigger than upsetting a national power on your home turf. This past weekend, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets stunned (and stung) the Clemson Tigers 24-21 on a last-second fire drill, capped by a game-winning field goal. That kick set off a wild celebration, with Georgia Tech fans storming the field after toppling one of the ACC’s most respected programs.
Fade the Storm
I love the energy of an underdog victory, but it always comes with a price. I live by a code: when a team storms the field or breaks down in tears after a win, I am obligated to fade them in the following game. The postgame emotion was everywhere—head coach Brent Key and quarterback Haynes King nearly in tears, and fans swarming the turf. That sets the stage for a natural letdown.
This week, Georgia Tech hosts Temple and is favored by 24 points. I am already locked in on Temple at +24.5, and I believe that is a strong number. The Owls enter Week 4 with two wins, coming off a 42-3 loss at No. 11 Oklahoma. In that game they were nearly 24-point underdogs as well, and while the score got away from them, I have a great deal of respect for this year’s Sooners. I do not believe Georgia Tech should be treated as anywhere near the same level.
Temple now has a taste of what a true top-15 team looks like. That experience should better prepare them to handle this matchup. More importantly, Georgia Tech just played and won its “circled” game of the year, and with Wake Forest on deck, it is unlikely they bring that same fire against Temple.
Improved Owls
Phil Steele projects this Temple team to be more improved than in recent seasons. They feature a mobile quarterback, a steady running back corps, and a strong offensive line. Defensively, new coordinator Brian Smith comes over from Rice, where his 2024 unit allowed 335 yards and 29 points per game. This is still a rebuild, but the Owls have enough to keep the margin in play.
Georgia Tech comes into this game off one of the biggest emotional wins of the season, and history tells us that letdowns often follow moments like that. Temple may not have the talent advantage, but they have experience facing top competition, a roster with a few playmakers, and the benefit of catching the Yellow Jackets in a flat spot. With the line sitting at 24, the Owls are positioned well to hang around long enough to cover. Temple +24 is absolutely the right side to back.
Go Owls!
