The South Florida Bulls are back in the AP Poll, coming in ranked No. 24 this week. But they have to go on the road to face a tough North Texas team that is both perfect this season, and are coming off a bye week. The Mean Green (great name) are off to a roaring 5-0 start, their first since 1959, back before my own father was born. This is a huge American Athletic Conference matchup as both are 1-0 so far and are looking to catch up with Navy and Memphis who sit on top. Let’s get into our favorite picks in this Friday night AAC matchup.

#24 South Florida vs. North Texas Mean Green NCAA Football Insights

Like I said, the Mean Green are rolling. But they certainly aren’t as battle tested as the Bulls. North Texas has beaten Lamar, Washington State and South Alabama all at home, winning by 51, 49, and 14. They had some trouble in Week 2, needing 20 second half points to force overtime where they beat Western Michigan on the road. The Mean Green also needed overtime on the road in West Point in their only AAC contest so far, beating Army 45-38 after allowing the Black Knights 10 points in the final three minutes of the game. But they are now well rested, coming off a bye, and get a chance to take down (arguably) the best team in the American.
South Florida pulled off a huge upset in the Swamp against Florida, and quickly jumped into the top 20. However then they were blown up at Miami, which really isn’t that bad of a loss considering the Hurricanes are in a different stratosphere than anyone else in the country. Aside from those two games, they’ve won convincingly against Boise State, South Carolina State and Charlotte, winning by 27, 49, and 28. Can they figure it out on the road in conference play?

I am pretty torn on a side in this game, but I do think I lean with North Texas. They have multiple advantages in this spot, including being at home and coming off a bye, but again, the Bulls have seen much tougher competition. The Mean Green needed OT against both of their “toughest” opponents, however they were on the road.
I can’t figure it out, but there’s only one man that makes the South Florida offense run, so I’ll be backing him to do exactly that.
South Florida vs. North Texas NCAA Football Picks and Predictions

Byrum Brown has been moving the ball with his legs this season
South Florida vs. North Texas Prediction: North Texas Wins Outright, Under 68
Best Bet: Byrum Brown (USF) Over 59.5 Rushing Yards (-130) BetOnline
I don’t mind the 62.5 or whatever else it may be, but I’ll pay a little juice for a nice even number. Much like Jake Retzlaff of Tulane, Byrum Brown headlines the Bulls’ run game.
He leads the team in carries with 64, rushing yards with 282 and touchdowns on the ground with three. He has 36% of the team’s rush attempts and 30% of the rushing yards. The next leading ball carriers have 100 less yards and half as many carries as this man. Brown makes the engine run.
He’s also had a 20+ yard rush in three of five games this season and has not taken a sack in two straight games. The young quarterback is coming off a 17-162-1 performance, running for 40+ yards in three of five games, clearing this number twice. Sure he needed 17 carries to do so, but all the pressure is on North Texas to remain perfect, and they have struggled to contain mobile QBs.
Mobile QBs vs. North Texas
- Broc Lowry (WMU): 12-66-2, Long 25, 5.5 YPC, 1 sack
- Dewayne Coleman (Army): 23-117-1, Long 12, 5.1 YPC, 0 sack
- Bishop Davenport (So Bama): 16-59-1, Long 34, 3.7 YPC, 2 sacks
The USF offensive line will give Brown time to roll out and find space, and he will have plenty of designed runs as well. While I do think the Bulls come up short, it won’t be without Brown putting up a fight.
