I know most of you will be tuning into the NFL’s version of Thursday Night Football as the Chargers host the Vikings at SoFi Stadium, but the college kids deserve some love in their matchup tonight, even if both teams are awful. The South Alabama Jaguars head to Atlanta to take on the Georgia State Panthers, as both teams are searching for their first Sun Belt win of the season. Someone has to come out on top tonight, so let’s get into our favorite picks in this contest and find out who will be victorious.

Both teams are terrible. I’m going to be blunt, they suck. Both are 1-6 overall this year and 0-3 in conference play. The Panthers are 1-6 against the spread as well, while South Alabama is slightly better at 2-5, although they have not covered as a favorite this year. The Jaguars beat Morgan State to open the season, and have followed it up with six straight losses, while Georgia State lost their openers to Ole Miss and Memphis before beating Murray State. Now they have lost four in a row.
Georgia State has seen two ranked teams this season (Ole Miss and Vanderbilt), while South Alabama did play Auburn when they were in the top 25. We don’t have any common opponents to try and get a gauge on how this stinker of a Sun Belt Showdown might go, but the numbers could tell us the story.

Georgia State sucks on both sides of the ball. Defensively, they are dead last in scoring, giving up 44.5 points per game. They are also bottom 10 in yards per rush allowed (5.7) and bottom 15 in yards per pass allowed (8.7). The Jaguars should be able to do whatever they please offensively.
As for the Panthers offense, it is very one-sided, but still horrendous. South Alabama doesn’t have the best rushing defense, but it won’t matter because all Georgia State does is pass the ball, and they aren’t even good at that.

I would advise you pay what you need to in order to get 24 plus the hook, however the Panthers might not put up 20.
Georgia State is bottom 10 in points per game, and bottom 20 in yards per carry. They cannot run the ball, and they don’t even try to. This team is No. 4 in the nation in pass play percentage, throwing the ball over 61% of the time, but, but, but, they are not effective, ranking bottom 20 in yards per pass (6). Now, South Alabama’s rushing defense isn’t all that great, but the secondary is rock solid.
The Jaguars rank top 30 in opponent completion percentage (No. 23: 58.3%) and yards per pass attempt (No. 26: 6.3). Plus they are also top 200 in passing yards allowed per game, giving up just 177.5 through the air. Georgia State has only gone over this number in their win against Murray State. They are bottom 10 in scoring, bottom six in points per play, and are third worst in red zone scoring percentage.
South Alabama is top 10 in rush play percentage, running the ball over 60% of the time, where they will have plenty of success. They average over 4.5 yards per carry and gain over 50 more yards on the ground than through the air each game. Look for the Jaguars to sustain long drives on offense while shutting down the Panthers in order to cover for the first time as a favorite.
