The Big Ten gives us a Friday Night battle from two teams that are about as far apart as you can get in this extended conference. The Washington Huskies are back in Seattle after a comeback weekend win in College Park, and on a short week they get to host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights of Piscataway, New Jersey. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a bye week following two straight conference losses, as they search for their first Big Ten victory. On the other sideline, Washington just found their first conference win in dramatic fashion. Can they turn it around on a short week at home? Find out below with our favorite picks.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Washington Huskies NCAA Football Insights

Rutgers started off with three wins, two easier than the other. They beat Norfolk State and Miami (OH) fairly easily, but earned a tough one to open the season against the Ohio Bobcats, winning 34-31. After scoring 31 first half points, the Scarlet Knights were outscored 14-3 in the second half, kicking a game winning field goal for the only fourth quarter points. But then conference play started, and they blew leads in both games.

Rutgers was up both 14-7 and 21-14 to the Iowa Hawkeyes, only to give up 17 fourth quarter points and lose at home by 10. Then they went to Minnesota for their first road game, jumping out to 14-0 lead, and even going into the break still up 21-14. But then the Gophers put up 17 second half points to their visitors’ seven, to hand Rutgers their second Big Ten loss.

The Huskies had three cupcake wins before hosting the No. 1 team in the nation, losing to the Ohio State Buckeyes 24-6 at home. In their first game in a different time zone, they pulled off a miraculous comeback against Maryland. After falling behind 13-0 by halftime, with the Terps extending that lead to 20-0, the Huskies scored 24 unanswered points, including 21 in the fourth quarter to win their first Big Ten matchup of the year. Will they be able to ride that momentum and build off of it in such a short week?

Despite Rutgers coming off a bye week, their defense is nonexistent. This is still a Friday night game for them, they have to travel literally all the way across the country, and change three times zones with this kick off being at 11:00 p.m. eastern for the New Jersey kids. The defense might be sleeping, and Washington can take advantage.

This is the perfect spot for the Huskies’ offense to explode. They put up 38, 70, and 59 in their first three games, and have only scored 30 in their last two. But the Rutgers’ defense is awful and are traveling three time zones for the first (and only) time this year. Washington has just two turnovers all season, with Demond Williams doing a great job of taking care of the football. Teams have been able to have their way with Rutgers on offense, and it will be no different in Seattle.

Offensive Success against Rutgers Defense

  • Ohio: 440 total yards, 31 points
  • Iowa: 346 total yards, 38 points
  • Minnesota: 359 yards, 31 points

The Scarlet Knights failed to force a turnover in all of those games, and I don’t see them having any takeaways on Friday night. The Huskies will utilize all of their offensive possessions, and I trust them to turn it into points. They rank top 40 in red zone scoring percentage, converting over 92% of the time when they are deep in opposing territory.

Rutgers is a bottom 50 defense in terms of points per game allowed, they are bottom 36 in yards per catch, and are bottom 20 in both opponent completion percentage and yards per pass. The Scarlet Knights let opposing quarterbacks complete 69% of their passes (nice) and gain 8.8 yards per pass attempt. Demond Williams will go demon mode on Friday night.

It’s also homecoming (not sure why they are doing that on a Friday game, but I’m not in charge).
