One of the best rivalries in all of College Football happens this weekend in Dallas, Texas, but I’ll admit, it’s lost some aura. Typically when these two teams go head to head, we are getting two of the best squads in the country, but not this year. The Oklahoma Sooners are carrying the load, ranking No. 6 in the nation while the preseason top ranked Texas Longhorns have stumbled their way out of the top 25. Let’s dive into our best picks and predictions in this matchup, and figure out why Arch Manning is still a short favorite in this contest.

The Texas Longhorns might be one of the most disappointing preseason No. 1 ranked teams of all time. They lost a very tough game to the now top ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, and we all said “okay, we get it”. Then they beat up on three Mickey Mouse teams who came to Austin, before getting beat in the Swamp by a bad football team in the Florida Gators. Yes, Gator fans, despite the win, you still have a bad football team with a terrible head coach in charge. Nevertheless, I think that loss speaks volumes on how bad the Longhorns actually are.
As for Oklahoma, they are 5-0 so far this season, beating both Michigan and Auburn at home. They have gone on the road this year, beating Temple in Philadelphia, but this will easily be their toughest test away from Norman. It’s not quite going to be a true road environment, and I expect a near 50/50 split in the stands. Everyone loves and shows out for the Red River Rivalry, and even though Texas isn’t playing up to their own standard, there is plenty of hype around this matchup.

John Mateer had hand surgery not too long ago, yet it is reported that he is likely going to try and play in this contest. Because of this, we have watched people buy in on the Sooners, as they were once 2.5 point underdogs, and now sit just catching a single point. Even if Mateer doesn’t start, this Oklahoma defense is good enough to carry the team, and Michael Hawkins is a respectable back up.
He’s started games last year and looked solid last week, but Brent Venables isn’t giving Sark any insight into who might play. But I’m betting that Mateer takes the field.

Texas is done. They have not beaten a Power Four team yet this year, proving they can’t win the big game. Oklahoma, however, is the truth. So why are the Longhorns favored? I’m not sure, but I’ll take the bait. I locked this in at +115 yesterday as well as the +2.5, but at this point just take the moneyline.
Like I said, even if Mateer doesn’t play, Hawkins is at least serviceable. Plus the Sooners’ defense is more than capable of carrying the team, as the Texas offense shuts down when the lights are brightest. Oklahoma allowed just 30 total points to Michigan and Auburn, holding both to less than 300 total yards. The only reason the Wolverines even scored a touchdown was because Justice Haynes broke off a 75 yard touchdown run.
Texas has struggled when it matters, going a combined 8/25 on third down against Ohio State and Florida, which is just a 32% success rate. They were also 1/5 on fourth down in those games, and have three total turnovers against Power Four teams. Oklahoma successfully held both Michigan and Auburn to just 3/15 on third down (20%) and won both games without forcing any turnovers. Look for the Sooners defense to finally produce some takeaways, and take some pressure off of an injured offense.
Oklahoma wins a low scoring shootout in Dallas this weekend.
