DeSean Bishop has almost 900 all purpose yards this season and 10 touchdowns - Tennessee Florida Picks

There’s a top 20 SEC Showdown at Neyland Stadium this Saturday night. The No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners take on the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville. Both teams sit at 6-2 on the season, and their chances of making the College Football Playoff look even slimmer with three losses on the resume. Our expert’s have their favorite picks in this contest, so let’s break it down.

#18 Oklahoma Sooners vs. #14 Tennessee Volunteers NCAA Football Insights

The Sooners started out with five straight wins, but have since lost two of their last three games in SEC play. Oklahoma had blow out wins over Illinois State, Temple and Kent State. They also have wins over No. 15 Michigan at home, against No. 22 Auburn in Norman, and on the road against South Carolina. However, they lost the Red River Rivalry to Texas, and couldn’t slow down No. 8 Ole Miss last week. The Sooners are headed into a bye week, but their remaining games following this one are at No. 4 Alabama, vs. No. 19 Missouri, and vs. LSU to close out the year. This game matters big time.

As for the Volunteers, they have two good losses on their schedule. They should’ve beat the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs in overtime at home, and lost to No. 6 Alabama on the road. Now, they squeaked out wins over Mississippi State on the road in overtime and against Arkansas at home, but other than that, they’ve handled business. Their toughest remaining test will be against No. 9 Vanderbilt to end the year and at Florida.

Oklahoma vs. Tennessee Prediction: Tennessee Wins & Covers, Over 56

Best Bet: Tennessee -3 (-104)  BetOnline

I think the Volunteers roll on Saturday. We already have a very high total, indicating there might be some back and forth. I don’t see the Sooners being able to slow down the Volunteers, especially in a night game at Neyland. The Sooners couldn’t stop Ole Miss last week at home, giving up 431 yards of offense, 32 offensive points and failing to force a turnover. They also lost the final quarter 9-0 to lose by eight. The Volunteers will be fine.

Tennessee has had six of eight games go over the number, while the Sooners finally had an over last week. Oklahoma finally played a decent offense and couldn’t slow them down. The same thing will happen this Saturday. Although the Sooners lead the nation in yards allowed per play, they are north of 100 (bottom 36) in opponent interception percentage. Offensively, they are No. 93 in yards per play and north of 100 in completion percentage.

The Volunteers are better equipped to handle a shootout, which is what I think they turn this into. They rank third in the country in points per game (41.9), top 10 in yards per pass (9.2) and top 30 in yards per rush, going for nearly nine yards a carry. The Sooners defensive numbers are certainly inflated due to whom they have played.

Oklahoma Opponents Yards/Game and Points/Game National Ranks

  • Michigan: 38, 50
  • Temple: 78, 42
  • Auburn: 99, 79
  • Kent State: 133, 116
  • Texas: 70, 50
  • South Carolina: 120, 118
  • Ole Miss: 4, 12

Tennessee ranks No. 8 in the nation in yards per game, and No. 3 in scoring. It will be the toughest offense Oklahoma has seen all year long, and we already saw they couldn’t stop a comparable team in the Rebels. This team has not played a top 50 offense other than what we saw last week, and against a top 10 offense in the nation, I don’t see them having any success slowing down their hosts.
