#1 Ohio State vs. #15 Michigan Picks and Predictions: The Big Game at The Big House

Julian Sayin and Ohio State take on Indiana in the Big Ten Championship - Indiana Ohio State Picks

We’ve waited all college football season for this contest. The Big Game, as those involved call it, happens every year between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines. This year the rivalry is being playing at The Big House in Ann Arbor, and both teams have plenty to play for other than just pride. Ohio State has been perfect all year long, but this one still means plenty to them. As for Michigan, their shot at the College Football Playoff is nearly nonexistent, but beating the Buckeyes would mean the team had a successful season. Let’s get right into our favorite picks in this matchup.

Jeremiah Smith should be back on the field this week against the Wolverines - Ohio State Michigan Picks

Jeremiah Smith should be back on the field this week against the Wolverines

The Wolverines have won the last four meetings in this rivalry game. The Buckeyes don’t have a victory since 2019, however they had won eight prior to this losing streak. Even last year, when Ohio State was on top of the world and Michigan was well out of contention, the Wolverines showed up on the road and took down the Buckeyes in Columbus, winning 13-10. They lead the all time series 62-51-6, but can they keep this winning streak going?

Although a win or loss would mean little to Ohio State’s CFP status, other than dropping them from the first overall spot, it’s still a rivalry game. And one that Ryan Day hasn’t been able to get past. The monkey of this rivalry game is still on Day’s back, despite winning the National Championship last year. They still can’t beat the team from up north. Will they be able to do it this weekend?

While the Buckeyes’ offense has been electric, when have they really been tested? Texas gave them some trouble in Week 1, holding them to just 203 total yards and 14 points, but it was enough to win the matchup. Other than that game, they have not seen a defense like Michigan’s, essentially inside the top 15-20.

Only one matchup between these two has stayed under this number in the last 15 contests, and it was last year. But I think we get another low scoring, grunge match. The Wolverines defense will be able to carry them in this game, like they did last year.

Michigan ranks top 15 in yards and points per play this season, ranking No. 10 in yards allowed per carry and No. 22 in yards allowed per pass. They are top 30 at getting to the quarterback and forcing interceptions, plus they are inside the top 40 in third down conversion rate as well. Offensively, they run a ton, and I’m not sure they have the air raid attack needed to move the ball in chunks and score in bunches. That’s where Ohio State has the nod.

However, the Buckeyes defense is just as good. They lead the country in yards and points per play, yards per pass, as well as red zone scoring percentage. Ohio State is also top 5 in third down conversions and yards per carry allowed, so I don’t see the Wolverines’ offense having much success. This total is plenty low already, but I see both teams struggling to put up points.

Michigan because they face the toughest defense in the league. Ohio State because they haven’t been tested and the Wolverines will come alive for this one. Let’s root for a classic under Saturday morning.
