Friday night’s Big Ten matchup between Nebraska and Minnesota promises to be an intriguing test for both teams. The Cornhuskers are coming off their first true road win of the season against Maryland, while the Gophers enter with momentum after a solid victory over Purdue. On paper, Nebraska may look like the superior team, but their performance last weekend raised more questions than answers, particularly with turnovers and sloppy execution.
Minnesota, meanwhile, has faced tougher competition on the road, including a matchup with Ohio State, giving them experience against elite teams. This game is not just about talent; it is about preparation, consistency, and how each team handles pressure in hostile environments. Here is a closer look at why this matchup has caught my attention.

Nebraska vs. Minnesota – October 17
This Friday night Big Ten matchup should be a fun one. The Nebraska Cornhuskers are coming off a road win over Maryland this past weekend, which marked their first true road game of the season. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Gophers are coming off a win over Purdue.
For those who paid attention to the Nebraska versus Maryland game, it was not exactly inspiring. It seemed like neither team truly wanted to win. Nebraska, in their first real road test, saw quarterback Dylan Raiola throw three interceptions. The Cornhuskers still managed a 34-31 win, but they did not cover the seven-point spread.
Back-to-Back Road Tests
Now, less than a week later, Nebraska is once again a touchdown favorite. I cannot and will not back them in this spot. Two road games in a row for a team that spent most of the season close to home is risky. They should not have beaten Maryland in my opinion, and another seven-point spread is too steep. That is why I took the Gophers at +8.5 earlier in the week.
I am not claiming Minnesota is elite, but I can see them keeping this game close. They have at least faced a legitimate team on the road this season, the Ohio State Buckeyes on October 4, where they lost 42-3. Playing Ohio State on the road is a far bigger test than going to Maryland or even hosting Michigan, the best team Nebraska has faced so far this season.
This game will be another true test for a Nebraska team that has largely avoided real challenges outside of Lincoln this season. Last week in Maryland, they made a number of costly mistakes but still managed to pull out the win. That type of luck is unlikely to repeat, especially with back-to-back road games on the schedule. Nebraska has shown flashes of talent, but their execution on the road remains a concern. Minnesota, while not elite, has faced tougher competition away from home and has the experience to stay competitive. The Gophers have the tools to keep this game close, and if Nebraska repeats the errors from last week, Minnesota could easily cover the spread.
