After losing their first two games, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have won three straight, and are sitting in the same position they were last year. They need to be perfect from here on out. No more slip ups, no more blemishes, they’ve already used them up. And they still have a couple of tough games on the schedule, so could they be looking ahead in this spot? The No. 16 ranked Irish host the NC State Wolfpack who started out strong, but have lost their last two against tough opponents. Let’s get into our favorite picks and find out where the edge lies in this matchup.

NC State Wolfpack vs. #16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish NCAA Football Insights

The Wolfpack opened up by beating the East Carolina Pirates, a very tough Virginia Cavaliers team, and then Wake Forest on the road. After that, they fell apart, dropping games at Duke and against a Virginia Tech team with an interim head coach. Sure, they bounced back with a win against Campbell, but does that really mean they are back? Now they head to South Bend to face an Irish team that has everything to lose.
Notre Dame opened up with a loss to Miami in South Beach, and then were upset by the Texas A&M Aggies at home. Both of those teams are playing like National Championship contenders, so those losses don’t look too bad. However, I highly doubt a three loss Irish team without a conference championship makes it into a 12 team playoff. Marcus Freeman and company know this, so I’m sure they will leave no doubt on Saturday afternoon as they need to continue to impress the CFP committee.

I liked Notre Dame to cover a lot more when it was closer to two touchdowns. The whole world was hammering last week’s over against Boise, with that matchup soaring under seeing just 35 total points. My lean is certainly with the over in this contest, but I’ll just back the Irish offense.

Do I worry about the defense possibly looking ahead? Yes. Do I worry about CJ Carr and the offense taking their foot off the gas? Eh, not as much. I think we could see a Notre Dame thumping, much like they did to Arkansas down in Fayetteville. The Irish have put up at least 300 yards of total offense in every game, including at least 390 in their last four straight. NC State’s offense might find some chunk plays for big gains, but defensively, they can’t contain the Irish.
NC State’s defense did not force any turnovers against Virginia Tech, Duke or East Carolina. They were out gained by nearly 100 yards by the Cavaliers and really should have lost after allowing 514 total yards and a 68% third down conversion rate (13/19). NC State ranks bottom 20 in third down conversion rate over the course of the season, and are bottom 40 in yards allowed per rush (4.9). Four separate teams have gained over 400 total yards when facing the Wolfpack defense, and it should be no different with an Irish team that needs very convincing wins from here on out.
Notre Dame converts over 50% of their third downs (No. 15 in the country), they are top 10 in points per game scoring over 40, and are top five in points per play. Leave no doubt at home, Touchdown Jesus take the wheel.
