Miami OH vs. Western Michigan – December 6

The grittiest conference championship takes center stage on Saturday, December 6, when the Miami of Ohio RedHawks meet the Western Michigan Broncos for the grand daddy of them all. This is the conference championship your dad’s best friends come over to pregame for. The championship that makes you want to go outside and run into a tree with the pads on. The MAC is where it is at.

For those wondering if we are ending the season with a player prop, you bet your sweet bippy we are ending this thing with a player prop. Give me the newbie, the guy filling in for Dequan Finn, who left the team to prepare for the draft in the middle of the season. What a way to build draft stock. I digress, Thomas Gotkowski is his name, the freshman out of Indianapolis who has gone over 185 pass yards in his 2 starts this season against Buffalo and Ball State. Despite his minimal experience, I think this benefits us with the RedHawks likely being down in this matchup.

Broncos Revenge

The last time these teams met was back in October, when the RedHawks knocked off the Broncos 26 to 17 at home. Finn went off for 260 yards through the air.

I am leaning on the same take I had last week when the Broncos faced Eastern Michigan and I took the over on Noah Kim’s pass yards. The Eagles quarterback exploded for 327 yards. My point then was that Western Michigan pass defense looked strong on the stat sheet because they had the luxury of not facing any of the pass heavy MAC teams.

Miami of Ohio is not a pass heavy team, throwing on only 44% of their plays. Gotkowski is averaging 23.5 pass attempts through two games, but he has been moving the ball efficiently. Inside Ford Field, under a dome with no weather to interfere, I expect this kid to throw with ease.

However, with the Broncos out for revenge on a neutral site field, they will come ready to dominate, which will force the RedHawks to throw if they fall behind. Gotkowski has yet to turn the ball over through the air in his short stint, but on the biggest stage he may make a few mistakes. Any early mistakes by the RedHawks, along with any quick scores by the Broncos, will only increase the likelihood that Gotkowski has to air it out. Let that boy sling the pill!
