Louisville vs. #2 Miami Picks and Predictions: Friday Night in South Beach

CJ Daniels leads the Hurricanes with five receiving touchdowns this year - Louisville Miami Picks

Two ACC teams go head to head on a short week as they play Friday night in Miami. However, to be fair, both teams are coming off a bye, so that really doesn’t matter. Anyways, the No. 2 ranked Hurricanes get to host the Louisville Cardinals who are now 4-1, and are coming off their first loss of the season after a red hot start. Both know the repercussions of this matchup, as the conference has not panned out like most thought it would (looking at you, Clemson). This is just the Hurricanes’ second ACC game, while the Cardinals are 1-1. Let’s get into our favorite picks and find out if Louisville has a shot at pulling off this upset.

Louisville Cardinals vs. #2 Miami Hurricanes NCAA Football Insights

Since coming over to Louisville, Miller Moss had them off to a great start. They blew out Eastern Kentucky, James Madison and Bowling Green, and had a big comeback win over Pittsburgh on the road after starting down 17-0 in the first quarter. Then big, bad Virginia came to town, and although the Cavaliers were ranked, Louisville found themselves as 6.5 point favorites at home. They out gained UVA by over 150 yards, but lost the turnover battle 2-0 and fell short in overtime, losing 30-27. However, they did outscore the Cavs 10-0 in the fourth quarter to force OT (after losing the third quarter by the same margin). They’ve had a week to think about everything and prepare for the Hurricanes.

Miami is easily one of the best teams in the country. They already have some great wins on their resume, and now they essentially have a cake walk into the ACC Championship. All they have to do is handle business. They’ve beat No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 18 South Florida, blew out Florida, and now beat No. 18 Florida State on the road, covering every spread along the way against FBS opponents. Could they be caught sleeping on the Cardinals? I doubt it.

All the Hurricanes have to do is handle business. That’s their ticket into the College Football Playoff. Win seven more games against unranked opponents and you’re in the conference championship. Beat up on an inferior foe in the ACC Championship, and boom, you’ve got a first round bye in the CFP (probably). Mario Cristobal has a championship caliber team, he knows it, they know it. Coming off a bye week after you’ve done nothing but get the job done all year long gives me plenty of confidence going into this matchup.

Louisville has no rushing offense. They are bottom 20 in rushing yards and yards per carry. The Cardinals rely plenty on Miller Moss’ arm, ranking top 12 in pass play percentage and top 30 in completion percentage. However, they are just middle of the pack in terms of yards per pass, so how effective can this air raid attack be against the best defense they’ve seen?

The Hurricane’s rushing defense is phenomenal ranking top 10 in yards allowed per carry (2.8). But the secondary is even better. Miami is top 20 in opponent completion percentage (57.5%), yards per pass allowed (6.1) and third down conversion rate (31.6%). On the other side of the ball, they rank top 30 in third down conversions (45.5%) and we know how lethal this offense can be. Coming off a bye, I see Miami covering yet another spread in a big ACC win.
