Kent State vs. Akron – November 10
We are running it back with Akron quarterback Ben Finley after the Zips blew out UMass last Tuesday by 30 points. Because of the lopsided score, Finley did not have the chance to surpass 200 passing yards. This week should deliver what I expected last week, Finley slinging that pill all over the gridiron.
Akron enters as a 5.5 point favorite over Kent State, who is coming off a tough loss to Ball State last Wednesday. The total sits at 47, and if I had to take a side or total, I would lean toward Akron covering the five and a half. However, Finley’s passing yards over 223.5 is the play here.
Struggling Pass Defense
Kent State will be the weakest pass defense Finley has faced all season, setting up a prime opportunity for him to find success through the air. The Golden Flashes are allowing 260 passing yards per game (115th), 7.9 yards per attempt (99th), and a 62.9% opponent completion rate (73rd). During conference play, they have allowed 230.8 passing yards per game while surrendering 62% completions. They have given up this number to Buffalo, UMass, and Toledo, while the other MAC teams they faced leaned heavily on the run.
Finley has been consistently clearing this number all season. In conference play, he has averaged 236 passing yards on 32 attempts per game. The senior has gone over this mark against some of the stronger pass defenses in the MAC. Last week’s matchup with UMass was the easiest passing test he has faced, and the only reason he did not hit 200 yards was the blowout nature of the game. He attempted only 20 passes but still completed 60%. Prior to that, his opponents all ranked inside the top 70 in passing yards allowed. Most notably, Finley threw for 230 yards against Buffalo, who ranks 27th in that category.
