The Stank:
Historically, the Iowa State vs. Iowa matchup remains close, with Iowa opening as a 2.5-point favorite and the total set at 35.5. Given these numbers, expect a tight, low-scoring game.
In low-scoring games, my rule of thumb is to lean towards the underdog, which is what I’m doing here.
Iowa’s success often hinges on its defense, and despite the hiring of new offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, the Hawkeye offense remains underwhelming. While quarterback Cade McNamara recently became the first Hawkeye since 2021 to throw three touchdowns in a game, it was against Illinois State, which is hardly a significant achievement.
This was Iowa’s first 40-point game since Week 3 of last season against Western Michigan, when former offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz was fighting to keep his job.

Both defenses have performed exceptionally well: Iowa allowed less than 200 yards and shut out the Red Birds, while Iowa State gave up just three points in their 21-3 win over North Dakota. Expect a classic, hard-nosed Big Ten game filled with punts.
Iowa State’s offense is poised to outperform Iowa’s, thanks to dynamic wide receivers Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins, along with quarterback Rocco Becht, who has experience against Iowa’s defense. Becht threw for 203 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in last season’s game against Iowa. With an extra year of experience and strong receiving targets, the Cyclones’ offense appears promising.
Higgins recently had 75 yards and a touchdown on five catches, while Noel added 135 yards and a touchdown on eight catches. The combination of Noel and Higgins could pose a serious challenge for Iowa’s defense.
With the Cyclones seeking revenge for last season’s loss and Iowa’s offense needing to prove itself, I’m backing Iowa State in this matchup.
