There’s a top ten showdown between two of the best teams in the Big Ten this weekend, and we’ve got our favorite picks. The Indiana Hoosiers head out west, all the way to Eugene, Oregon to take on the Dan Lanning led Ducks. Two of the top Heisman candidates go face to face as Fernando Mendoza and Dante Moore battle it out at Autzen Stadium. Curt Cignetti leads the undefeated Hoosiers as both teams look to remain perfect, but only one can be victorious. Does Indiana have what it takes to win this big game on the road? Or do the Ducks dominate at home?

Fernando Mendoza has undoubtedly been one of the best quarterbacks in the country this year. He’s completing 73% of his passes this season for an average of 9.9 yards per attempt. Add in 16 touchdowns through the air with just one interception, and 102 rushing yards for two touchdowns and it’s no wonder why he’s near the top of the Heisman oddsboard. Indiana has Big Ten wins over Illinois in Bloomington (by 53 points) and over Iowa on the road. Now following a bye week, they face their toughest opponent yet.
But the Ducks are also coming off a bye and bring a perfect 5-0 record into this game. They beat the Penn State Nittany Lions on the road in their last contest, but other than that have had cupcake wins. Plus, with Penn State losing to UCLA, that win doesn’t look as convincing (to some). However, this is currently the Ducks last ranked opponent on the schedule, so they’ll certainly bring everything they can to make sure they get this win at home.

Dante Moore and the Ducks face another top 10 opponent this weekend

I think this is a game that Dan Lanning starts off strong, aggressive, and snatches the soul of their visitors before Indiana can even adjust to the time zone. Oregon has started strong all year long and this is clearly a game they’ll get up for.
Oregon Ducks 1H Scoring
- vs. Montana State: 38 points
- vs. Oklahoma State: 41 points
- at Northwestern: 17 points
- vs. Oregon State: 21 points
- at Penn State: 3 points
Obviously we have an anomaly there, and Indiana’s defense is plenty good, arguably better than Penn State’s. But coming off a bye week, I’d like to think that Lanning has schemed up a very aggressive plan to knock the Hoosiers out of the game early. I already think this matchup turns into a shootout, so why not back the explosive hosts to start off strong? Illinois was able to score all 10 of their points in the first half, and the Hawkeyes scored 10 in the first half before only getting three in the second (before the Mendoza safety). Cignetti is great at making defensive adjustments at the break, but until then, I see Dante Moore showing out.
It’s worth noting that this is also the first (and only) time the Hoosiers head to the West Coast. Yes, I trust they will be focused, but as far as performing in a tough road environment early on, we saw defensive struggles at Kinnick Stadium two weeks ago in the first half, and I think it will be a similar situation at Autzen this Saturday afternoon.
