#2 Indiana vs. #1 Ohio State Picks and Predictions: Big Ten Championship

Jeremiah Smith and Ohio State are back in the Big Ten Championship this season - Indiana Ohio State Picks

The two best teams in the country meet at Lucas Oil Stadium this Saturday night for the Big Ten Championship between the top ranked Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 2 Indiana Hoosiers who are right behind them. Both teams went a perfect 12-0 during the regular season, avoiding each other, leading them to meet up in the conference championship to see who stays on top. Both quarterbacks are also battling for the Heisman trophy, so there’s plenty of storylines to follow in this game. Let’s dive into our favorite picks.

Not only were the Buckeyes 12-0, they also went 10-2 against the spread, failing to cover against Ohio (28 point favorite, won by 26) and against Purdue (29.5 point favorite, won by 24). The Hoosiers weren’t totally as dominant with their 7-5 ATS record, but they stayed perfect despite some close calls. However, my question is, when has either team played someone comparable to their current foe?

Indiana had to go into Oregon and take down the Ducks in Eugene, which they did by double digits as a touchdown underdog. Ohio State has their Week 1 win over Texas, but that feels like ages ago. Since then, they’ve been cruising down easy street. Are they in for a rude awakening against the Hoosiers in Indianapolis?

In terms of the total, Indiana was 7-5 to the over this year, while the Buckeyes were just 4-8 to the over. Could defense be the name of the game this weekend?

Everyone loves talking about these offenses and they should. Mendoza and Sayin are two of the best in the country and are in the running for the Heisman trophy. This game could be their moment to win it.

These teams are first and second in the nation in converting on third down, while ranking second and fifth defensively. Moving the ball is going to be very difficult, and points will be at a premium in this game.

Now, I have not bet this yet. I am waiting. Right now, the line is in purgatory. The difference between 3.5-5.5 isn’t super drastic in football, but the line is ticking down, and I am hoping for a field goal. I also feel very strongly about the under, and will likely add it to my card prior to kick off on Saturday.

The Buckeyes have the best defense in the nation. Plain and simple. They lead the country in points and yards per game, they are second in third down conversions and third in red zone scoring allowed as well. Indiana is right behind them, third in points and sixth in yards per game, as well as No. 5 in third down conversions. But they balloon up to No. 58 in opponent red zone scoring. Things could be much easier for the Buckeyes when they get close to the goal line.

I also think Ohio State has the better secondary unit, which will do their best at making Mendoza hate his life for four quarters. They should have enough success to knock him out of his rhythm, and keep this conference championship low scoring. Ultimately, I see the Buckeyes as having enough firepower to control and win this ball game.
