#2 Indiana vs. Maryland Picks and Predictions: Can Terps Come to Play?

The No. 2 team in the country heads to College Park this Saturday as the Indiana Hoosiers take on the Maryland Terrapins. Both teams started out 4-0 this season, but then things have gone in two very different directions. The Hoosiers are a perfect 8-0 and 5-0 in Big Ten play, while the Terps have lost three straight, dropping to 4-3 overall this year. Below we have our favorite picks in this lopsided contest, which could end up being a sleepy spot for the favorite. Let’s get into it.

#2 Indiana Hoosiers vs. Maryland Terrapins NCAA Football Insights

Had to use the graphic for my distant relative’s player of the week award. Moving on, the Hoosiers have been undeniably perfect. They can tango, salsa or waltz their way into the Big Ten Conference Championship with remaining games against Maryland, Penn State, Wisconsin and Purdue. Those teams have a combined record of 1-17 in Big Ten games this year. The Hoosiers still have two top 10 wins on their resume, and going 12-0 would solidify a date with Ohio State at Lucas Oil Stadium.

However, they have to get by the Terps. Maryland has lost three straight but have kept them all close, covering in their last four. They are also coming off a bye week, so hopefully that extra rest will come into play in their favor. Regardless, the Terps are just two wins away from being bowl eligible, and despite them possibly not being able to do it this week, they will certainly bring their best effort against their toughest opponent to date.

We backed Indiana on the spread at home last week and it hit, but this week, we are plugging our nose and fading them early. Let me explain.

I like turtles, especially this week. the Terps are at home, off of a bye week, and are coming off three straight heartbreaking losses. They might be one of the best teams during the first three quarters, and one of the absolute worst in the final 15 minutes. Although their offense isn’t too scary, their defense can be very threatening.

The Terps defense leads the country in interceptions per game, snagging 2.5 in each home contest. They are also top 30 in sacks and third down conversion rate, they are top 20 in yards per play (No. 33 yards per carry allowed, No. 17 in yards per pass allowed) and top 10 in points per play. Perhaps this could be a sleepy spot for the Hoosiers who could overlook the downward trending Terps.

Maryland has competed in four Big Ten games. They led 20-7 at halftime against Wisconsin, winning by 17 for their only conference victory. The Terps led the Huskies 13-0 at half and 20-3 after three quarters, they led Nebraska 31-24 after three, and led UCLA 10-7 after three frames, but ended up losing every single contest. Maryland has allowed 51 of the 88 points scored against them in Big Ten play to come in the fourth quarter. That’s nearly 60% of scores coming in the final quarter of the game. They have covered four straight spreads as an underdog, they compete in the first half of these games, and I think they are capable of surprising the Hoosiers on Saturday.

This will be one of the tougher secondaries Fernando Mendoza has seen this year, and I think it could lead to some struggles early on the road. Despite Maryland ranking No. 76 in points per game, they balloon up to No. 42 in the country in first half scoring. They also rank No. 12 in points per game allowed, jumping into the top 10 when looking at the first half. I also have a Happy Meal on the first half ML at +625.
