Two top 25 teams meet in Atlanta the Friday after Thanksgiving for some “Clean Old-Fashioned Hate”, or at least that’s the nickname given to this rivalry. The No. 4 ranked Georgia Bulldogs take on the No. 23 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets where the Atlanta Falcons play. This matchup doesn’t mean much in terms of postseason implications, but it’s still a game both teams should get up for, plus we saw an eight overtime thriller last year. Let’s get into our favorite picks for this year’s contest.

#4 Georgia Bulldogs vs. #23 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets NCAA Football Insights

Do Stockton and the Bulldogs care about winning this game? Or are they focused on the playoffs?
The Yellow Jackets had been playing perfect all season long, and could sniff the field of 12 in the College Football Playoff. However a late loss to NC State put things in jeopardy, and a home defeat last week to Pittsburgh made their dreams disappear. They won’t be playing for an ACC Championship anymore, and therefore, won’t have a spot in the CFP. But they are one win away from a 10 win season, something they haven’t done since 2014. Plus they haven’t beat the Bulldogs since 2016.
But Georgia won’t go down easy. Although Georgia will likely get knocked out of the SEC Championship with an Alabama win on Saturday, they’ll still try to impress the committee as an at-large bid in the CFP. Their one blemish all year long was losing to the Crimson Tide by three at home, where they held their visitors scoreless in the second half. But how much do they care about this one? They have their sights set on a National Championship.

The Yellow Jackets haven’t won in almost a decade, losing seven straight meetings and they’ve only beaten Georgia four times since the turn of the century. This has been their best team in program history by far, and if they want to take down Big Brother, this is the year to do it. The Bulldogs care very little about this game, and it would be a much bigger psychological victory for the Yellow Jackets, and I think they may bounce back.

The Yellow jackets run the ball a ton, and despite the Bulldogs having great rushing defense numbers, have they faced anyone of this caliber?
Georgia Tech ranks top 40 in rush play percentage, running the ball over 55.5% of the time. They do so for 5.6 yards per carry (No. 8 in the nation), and also rank top 10 in rushing yards per game, going for nearly 215 as a team. I think it’s safe to say they are a top 10 rushing offense (and that’s being conservative).
Georgia’s toughest opponents all year can’t run the ball. Alabama is a bottom 20 rushing offense, Texas is bottom 30. Sure, maybe Tennessee and Ole Miss are in the top 40, but that won’t compare to the Yellow Jackets. They are going to pound the ground, chew the clock, and hold the pigskin long enough to cover this two touchdown spread. Plus they will simply run it much more than the Dawgs are used to facing, wearing down the trench unit every single drive. The Bulldogs are also outside the top 50 in third down conversion rate while Georgia Tech’s offense is also top 10 in that category, plus yards per play and red zone scoring percentage.
This rivalry game means much more to the underdog.
